homemade wheel weights

For those of you that like to make things yourself, here's one I did today. Any decent fishing supply will carry fishing weights (I already had the weights). I took 2 2oz weights with eyelets on each end, cut the eyelets off, and hammered the weights flat and formed them around the inside of the wheel. Two of the 2oz weights was perfect for a 2.2 wheel. I was able to flatten/form them enough that they touched on both sides for even weight. I circled them about ten times with a strong tape and done. 4oz in each wheel. You can make them heavier just by leaving them thicker, maybe with 3 or 4oz weights.

Pics would help

I was uploading the pictures when you posted "thumbsup"

Good idea. Mine where a PITA to make. I bought the stick on wheel weights but couldnt really form them around the wheel. I ended up cutting each piece to length, weighing every one to make sure they were equal weight, then sticking them on.

Took me a good 6 hours to weight my wheels

if you go to a quality car parts store they will have stick on wheel weights. While they do not form perfectly around the rim, if you break them into the 1/4 oz sections they fit fairly well, once they're fitted, a quick nice tight wrap with electrical tape to make sure they stay put and don't stain up your foams works well. I think the total cost for enough weights to do 4 sets of rims nice and heavy was under $20. approx time to do a set on beadlocks, 30-45 min for all 4 tires.

A fast easy way to weight the OD of a rim is to wrap solid plumbers solder around the rim (under the tire foams) then put a few layers of tape over it.
Takes about 4 minutes/rim.

You can find the solder at almost any hardware type store. It's ~1/8" to 3/16" in diameter and usually comes in a 1lb spool.

I'm going to do something similar soon. I got some lead sheet from work and it's really easy to cut to size with a pair of scissors. Probably just going to wait until I replace the rims and tires as I don't feel like f-ing with the glued stockers.

I spent today "f-ing" with the glued stockers. Oven trick worked thankfully. I was planning on joining you guys tomorrow but ran out of CA on the last tire

Great idea, I was wondering the best way to cleanly weight my 40 series on a SuperCrawler

I go to the local tire shop and ask to raid their "take-offs" bin. Last time I got all the old tire weights I could carry for free.

This is what I do too. Works perfect, and conforms nicely. Couple tight wraps with electrical tape, and they're ready to go. I believe last time I bought some it was $12 for 1 lbs. roll.

Great solution.
