How bad is a cheap servo?

I'm getting a wreckluse chassis, and with every thing else, I'm a little over budget. I know ideally I'd just say f it and rock a pimp servo. If I get a smaller say, 40-50$ range, will it explode in a horrific fireball terribly disfiguring thousands of people?
Or just kind if leave me wanting more oomph on occasion? I'm not going to be competing, just playing. I figure unless it explodes, I could move that servo to another car later and get a better one. But I need to pay uncle sam and recover first.
Any recommendations? Or anyone got a medium servo they would sell?

Get yourself a Savox SC-0251 servo They are around 40$, have all metal gears, and put out around 225oz. of torque! They are also very water resistant LOL Don't ask how I know!

Get a good one from the start. Servos are one place you shouldn't be skimpy. Performance will suck, and you will probably end up buying a better one on down the road. Then you've got a cheapo sitting on your workbench doing nothing.

if your wreckluse is anything like mine it weighs a ton and a subpar servo may not be the best idea. Obviously that is the advice of when money is not an option but i think when it comes down to drive or not to drive i get whatever i can.

It really depends...

Most people are running 2.2's on their Wreckluse chassis, of course it is not optimal to run 2.2s with a weak and/or cheap servo.

If your are going to run 1.9's you can get away with less servo since the tires arent as big.

If you give us an idea of what you are looking to spend we can probably help get you into a servo that is a good option at your price point. Some people will go all in and put a $100+ servo in a 2.2 scaler, I personally dont have enough cash to throw at all my rigs so I get "value" parts that usually hold up quite well for how much I have paid for them.

For what it's worth, I was in the same boat several years ago with my AX10. I wound up trying an analog servo from crawfordperformanceengineering.com. Just went to see if they still carry it. It's called CPE-SER4: CYS Hi-Torque Metal Gear Servo. $19.99. It's not programmable, but unless they've changed the servo, I know I got more than my money's worth from it. This standard-sized analog servo features:

- Full metal gears with bearings
- Multiple servo horns and mounting hardware. Servo uses Futaba-splined servo arms.
- Standard size: 1.6”x0.8”x1.5” (40.8x20.1x38mm)
- Weight: 1.98 oz (56g)
- Operating Speed @ 5V: 0.18sec/60 deg.
- Operating Speed @ 7.2V: 0.16sec/60 deg.
- Stall Torque @ 5V: 208 oz-in (15 kg/cm)
- Stall Torque @ 7.2V: 224 oz-in (16.1 kg/cm)
- Operating Voltage: 5-7.2V

If I remember correctly, the folks at Crawford recommended running it at no more than 6v to get the longest life from it. That's what I ran mine at. If you can hold out until you can afford a better servo, the HiTec 7954-sh has proven itself flawless and strong after 3 years of me abusing the snot out of it on my AX10 and now my XR10. You can grab it on E-Bay for about $80 shipped.

Just depends on what you have for dough.

I got a Power HD 1501MG, which according to the manufacturer is supposed to provide 17 kg-cm at 6.0V. That's a <$20 servo.
- My measurements proved that with a 6V feed it would operate at 9 kg-cm, but not at 11 kg-cm. The 17 kg-cm statement is bogus!
- The ~10 kg-cm available isn't enough to operate the wheels when my LCC stands on the nose, but will do until I can afford anything better.

I just installed this on my XR10 HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : BMS-35A High Voltage (7.4V) Brushless Digital Servo w/Titanium Alloy Gear 35.5kg / .14sec / 74g WOW, do I regret selling my 7950? Nope! 493oz-in at 7.4v for $57 cant beat it. aluminum case is kinda cool too.

Fred0000 , what servo horn are you using ( hitec, jr or?) and how do you like the sPeed Compared to the 7950? I loved my 7950 but let it go In a scaler. Been looking at this servO for my wraith.

Well, ordered the Savox SC-0251, we'll see how it works with the 2.2s etc.
(If USPS would hurry up and finish delivering things that is)

Worse case, I'll run it for a few weeks, then try that one from hobbyking, and if I still don't like it I'll spend more loot, and put both of them in old RC10s or something. They have to be better than the gaggle of futaba 3004s I seem to have collected over the years. (I've only managed to "break" two of them? One I didn't have the wire ran well, and it caught something in a horrible wreck ripping the wire out, the other's case broke in half along with the chasis )
