hpi sprint 2

picked up the sprint 2 tonight. it looks in great shape overall. there is some light scrathes on the bottom of the chassis and very small dents on the motor. it looks like a previous owner put some kind of glue in some spots, no idea why at the momment. the is some on what be the rear hinge pins and some on the chassis in front of the servo. also the steering has a TON of slop in it.

from memory of my last sprint 2 it looks like the motor was flipped to make room for a servo saver. a diff case has been trimed, and the diff in that case has been shimmed, and looks like it may rub the case. also what would be the front belt seems to rub the motor and chassis in one spot.

other than that everything looks in new to slightly used shape. heres a pic:

i started to convert the sprint without taking it completely apart..... well that didnt go so well. so i ended up tearing it almost completely down. during the disassmbly i found what the glue was for on the hinge pins..... 2 of them had no eclip.

to start the rebuild i cut the center part out of the diff cases. starting with the rear of the car i put everything together. i put it back to stock except the hinge pins are flipped so the eclip is on the outside. everything was going good, except the dog bones wouldnt fit!

next i got most of the front end in. and started on the center. the previous owner flippid the motor mounts and had a bigger pulley for the front. everything went back to stock without much trouble.

right now most of the main stuff is put back on. it still needs the steering parts put in, front a arms, front bumper, front shocks mounted, the belt tensioner for the front belt put back on, and finally electronics put back in.

heres some pics of the rebuild.

i seem to have figured out the steering issue. with this one being originally converted to front motor, the previous owner cut the right bellcrank for the steering. so i had to figure out how to set up the steering.

it seems to work so far. its not going to win any best in show awards but it works for now until i get the proper parts to fix it. the top plate is off in the pic to make more room to work.

I have both,a tt-01 and a Sprint 2 flux,my suggestion is drift the tt-01,and speed the Sprint. The tt-01 has just enough adjustibility to drift but sucks as a go fast. You will get better performance out of the Sprint.Or just set up the Sprint to go fast and put drift tires on it to drift, you just have to compensate in control for the non drift set-up.

thats the plan. i have a tt01e (which you may have seen the thread for) as a drift car and im using the sprint as a go fast.

thats the reason i converted this one from a front motor to rear motor and took out the countersteer.

i picked up a 1968 camaro body, black vintage 5 spoke wheels and saphire blue metallic paint

i took out the stock electronics because the motor and esc were way to slow, and the servo was crap.

ill post the electronics once its tested. i wouldve tested it already but its been too wet outside.

Really liking the hpi as a drifter I think I've picked my next :mrgreen:hobby car

they are pretty good as s drifter. but this one is not set up for that.

i got the body painted and mounted a few days ago. the paint job sucks but it will work.

the electronics in it now are a castle 4600kv 4-pole, mamba max sct esc, align ds610 servo and spektrum sr300 rx, and a spektrum glitchbuster.

i took out the car earlier for the fost time with these electronics. at first it was very touchy! the steering was very sensitive, and it wanted to spin out under hard acceleration. so i turned the forward travel down on the rx from 150% to 100%. also i turned the steering rate from 100% down to 80%. those changes made it much better.

a few passes later, the drivers side rear tire fell off wile i was making a uturn! luckily i was able to get the tire before it got lost, unfortunately i wasnt so lucky with the nut.

heres a pic of how it looks now.

the electronics seemed to be too fast for the car so i took them out. i will be ordering a tekin rs and 13.5 redline motor soon.

I love my sprint 2, and drifting is a lot of fun. I have locked the rear, put a one way on the fron, I tried CS'ing to 50 % but did not like it so i'm, backl at 50-50, using a ballistic 10.5. After trying to race both on and off road drifting just seem like guys having fun in a parking lot with rc cars. Not all the hassle and expense that goes with racing. after watching some crawler / scaler videos it seemed like the same thing guys having fun with rc trucks, part of the reason I decided to get a scaler.

on the last run before taking the electronics out, the front left knuckle broke. last night i got it fixed and replaced the hubs with 4 degree ones as well.

the redline and rs will hopefully be ordered soon as i want to have this ready before february 5th. so i can test it in between classes.

im trying to fix the binding in the front of the sprint. i went to the lhs a few days ago to try and get some shorter axles..... both sets were too long!

so yesterday i ordered 2 sets of 70mm cvds. i made sure they were the same part number as the set on the hpi website.

the 70mm cvds came in today. i will hopefully be picking them up tomorrow

i put the cvds in earlier today, and the binding issue seems to be fixed.

im probably not going to go with the redline and rs for now. i put the castle 1406 motor back in with a 35t pinion and an 87t spur.

this time im trying to keep the wires out of the way better and using zip ties to keep everything neat.

motor installed and wires zip tied to chassis.

clearance between wires and belts. not a whole lot, but should be enough.

esc mounted. still need to run rx wire, but i will do that after i mount the rx to the chassis.

wire clearance. again not alot but hopefully its enough.

relocated on/off switch. i could see it getting in the way of the steering.

im trying to have this together enough for a quick run either tommorrow morning or sometime sunday. weather permitting, i will bring this to class with me on tuesday or thursday to run it on a local parking lot.

i got an axial 2.4 rx and a spektrum glitch buster mounted. the servo is ready to be mounted once i find a phillips head screwdriver

j got the sprint to the point i could drive it around, but the pinion and spur werent meshing right and ended up stripping 2 teeth on the spur. i tried to modify an associated 87t spur, but the mount wasnt centered.

so i went to the lhs to pick up a spur gear, which they didnt have so i ordered a carbon fiber 87t spur

i mounted a tc6 spur gear and i have an atomik brushless system coming. im also switching this to a futaba rx
