Hummer H2 SUT and sand rail build

Well, I have several projects that I've either started or have in mind, too many ideas actually. So I decided to pick one and do a build thread, and the one I picked was my CC-01 Hummer H2 SUT / Losi Mini-T Sand Rail build. This build is going to be simple for the main vehicle (SUT) since I only need to make a few modifications to the CC-01 chassis. Most of the build for the SUT will be in the detail work for the wheels, grill gaurd, roof rack, mirrors and side rails. The sand rail will be more involved with a tube frame and modified wheels. So here are the specs.

Hitec servo (haven't decided yet)

Here are a few quick reference photos I'm going by. I have a few more angles of the sand rail. I've already started the build, but I don't have the time right now to post all the photos of the work done so far.

I never thought about a tubed out Mini-T rail. It should fit nice and scale like to the H2.

Yah, it's really close in scale to the body I'm using. I already have the paddle tires and narrowed the front rims and tires. I'll get some photos of those soon too.
 
Well, here are the first set of photos showing my progress.

I'm starting out with a Proline H2 SUT body that I painted charcoal metallic. I then used some Model Masters (Testors) "Custom Lacquer System" Flat Black (28134) for the plastic areas on the H2. This gives a real nice contrast to the shinny body color. The paint sticks really well to Lexan and won't flake.

Here's the Mini-T I'm starting out with. More on that later on in the build.

The first thing I did was swap out the ugly blue steering knuckles with black TA03 steering knuckles. These are the exact same parts, just molded in different colors. While doing that I also installed some GPM universals.

I then moved onto the wheels. I'm using some Flywheel wheels that I decided to modify so there are NO lock nuts visible. I got the idea from the way Tamiya Mountaineer/Bruiser wheels are attached and applied it here.

I started with a set of four Flywheels and four white touring car dish wheels.

I took the adapter out and milled down the nub on the back of the rim.

I then made some carbon fiber disk with holes corresponding to the hole pattern on the face of the wheel. Every other hole is either larger than the hole in the rim, or just large enough to pass a 4-40 screws threads through. These will be going on the back side of the rim.

I put the touring car rims on the lathe and turned them down to fit inside the back of the Flywheels.

I mounted up the touring car wheel and lined up the new adapter plate to mark the holes where the screws will thread into. The center hole is just large enough to fit over the wheel nut to center it perfectly. I then also epoxied the adapter plates in, test fitted everything and installed the screws. To remove the wheels I have to remove five screws that are hidden in the wheel pattern. I'll be dying the touring car wheels black so it isn't visible through the other holes. I thought about drilling larger holes in there, but though it might weaken the wheel.

There you have it. Nice wheel nut-less wheels. I installed some Tamiya high-lift tires and some faux beadlock rings from The Scale Shop.

Next I'll be upgrading the rear four-link suspension and shortening the wheel base to fit the body. Until next time!
 
That wheel idea is faking awesome! I think you need to contact RC4WD about that and get some aluminum ones made up. "thumbsup"
 
Well, here is another quick update. I upgraded and modified the four-link suspension. I'll let the photos explain for themselves.

I then started on the grill guard. So far I have my rods to form the outer portion bent and cut. I also have the mounts. All I need to do now is to make the vertical members and braise the whole thing together. I'll end up having this chromed to match the chrome on the body.

Hmmm, I just saw this on the internet. Maybe I'll take it to this level and make a grill guard like this one. It's the same basic shape as the standard one I was going for, with just a few more bars. What do you guys think?

As you requested, a small update regarding the sand rail.

So basically I'm using Losi paddle rear tires mounted to some RPM Revolvers for the Mini-T and some Losi single rib tires for the front. What I did however is narrowed the front tires and rims to look like the ones in my reference photos.

well now that summer is just about over and the weather has started to cool down, I can now spend some time in the shop to finish this project. Here are just a few notes.

- I decided to ditch the lexan h2 sut body and go with a hard plastic fj cruiser body
- got my mongoose brushless system
- since I'm using a different body, I have to redo the rear suspension
- and finally, I have lots of work to do
 
excellent work on those wheels! love the thought that went into it and well executed.
