I need some help guys! My girlfriend works as a home health nurse for a guy that is almost totally paralyzed. He lost an arm in an industrial accident and has very little movement in the other arm. He is able to drive his motorized wheelchair with a T-handle on the joystick, but his movement is quiet jerky. He is amazed by the whole R/C thing and asked if there is anyway I could figure out a way he could drive a R/C boat (he has a large pond that is wheelchair accessable). What I am needing to know is... where can I find a radio that has single stick control that is strong enough that he cant break it off, and that I would be able to add a T-handle to the controller. I have no idea where to start?

Not really sure where to get one, but you might try calling the Radio mnf. I'ld try Futaba first, you prob won't find a single stick radio, but i don't see why a good dx6 or something couldn't be retro-fited to work, mabe move one stick into a Fabed wood or other box and use a "T" handle for the controle...try there first. Second check with the Scooter people see what is available through them for a controle. My .02....hope that help even a little.8)

How about getting a 4 channel stick and just use one stick? vertical axis throttle, horizontal steer. I think most of them have screw-on sticks, you can make (if you can't buy) a threaded t-handle for it.

I think I saw a single stick radio once with a trim type piece for throttle. I'm pretty sure it was for airplanes though. You could also look into using a 4-channel radio and only use one joystick for both throttle and steering.

Yea, I think I saw that one too. What I am worried about is his control and strength. He has little control, but lots of strength! (She exercises his good arm everyday.) I am afraid a regular stick radio would get the stick broke off, especially once a T handle is added causing extra leverage. I have a video game joystick (cheap Wal-mart video game in the toy department) that I may try to gut and replace with the insides of an old 4-channel I have here.

Try contacting wheelchair manufacturers.
A buddy of mine has had the same problem.
He was/is very strong but has little control.
His wheelchair is fitted with a single stick controller that can withstand the abuse.
It electronically levels out the shocks in his muscles."thumbsup"
