say i have a ford 302 stroked to 347 and i have 500 horses on it and its carbed. and i have a 98 xj. would it be illegal to engine swap a newer motor out and puting in a custom? its a project i am doing and i wanna drive it weekly. 2wd xj trophy truck.

Why would it be? people do it all the time. Thay put small blocks in jeeps all the time and hemi's in the new jeeps. I say go for it.

When your 98' Jeep was built it was designed and manufactured to meet emissions for 1998 vehicles in its GVWR class. Any carbed engine will not meet those emission requirements. You can get away with the swap no problem depending on what state you live in. If you live in states that do the sniffer test and have fairly strict inspection requirements you will not pass. Honestly I would go with a fuel injected engine of similar year and make to your vehicle. There are parts out there to soup up the 4.0l I6 for not a lot of money.

to soop up is not going to really be good. its got 137 miles on it. thats just more time in rebuilding an engine. i can switch the 347 over to feul injected but ill loose horsepower. not looking to put add ons. its and all motor motor. no turbo or supercharger. 16:1 compression and trickflow heads. the hole deal. i was just wondering. wat if i take the jeep up for insurance before the swap. would that keep it on the dlow?

I'm calling BS on the 16:1, too. That's into the range of needing absolute top end fuel or even alcohol to run.

On the other side of it, while it is possible to get the fuel injection to work, carbs are just so much easier to setup on a race engine like he claims that he has. There's some expensive equipment needed to be able to effectively tune a EFI setup.

As to the legality. If you plan on running legally on the street, then it won't fly. That's in violation of federal law. You can swap in the same year or newer engine, but it's illegal to go older. Sure, you can probably do it, and get away with it, but your question was whether or not it was legal. And the answer is no.

It would take 114 to 116 octane to run this. Just out of interest I just called my supplier. Figure $550 to $570 per 55 gallon drum

Ok i call B.S.

A 500Hp 347 is not out of reason now a 500Hp 347 at 16.1 I would be pissed. At 16.1 you would be on Alcohol and if you do buy 118 fuel its what over 18 a gallon now so you are sure to hell not going to drive it around to the store and to get the kids from school.

Now Carb VS EFI You can make just as much power either way just one is more user friendly for most.

As for engine swaps if you no not have emissions do it.Screw what the Feds could say how the hell would they know.We swap motors out all the time and we carb stuff that was fuel injected. The county next to us does not have emissions so we tag all of our stuff down there.
