let me formally introduce myself.

some of you may know me as the jeep guy... or the guy that cuts the shit out of tires... but actually

My name is Travis Rake. i was born and raised in southern indiana in a small town called starlight. my whole life my dad tought me to be proud and take pride in any and everything i do.

in 2006 i joined the United Stated Marine Corps. after bootcamp and all my schooling, i got stationed at marine corps base hawaii working on the CH-53d sea stallion. ive been stationed here for the last 5 years and about to take part in my 3rd deployment overseas as a helicopter airframes mechanic.

The CH-53d has been around since vietnam and still going strong but as the years go by this old bird is ready for retirement. my unit HMH-362 the "UGLY ANGELS" are about to go on the last deployment the 53d will ever see, b4 they get decommissioned upon our return from afghanistan.

so im taking what my father taught me and putting it into a build that i will and i hope you guys will enjoy. And also to commemorate this aircraft that I've put my blood sweat and tears into.

the official build will begin tomorrow when the mail man gets here. i just wanted to rant about why the build will go the direction it is.

the paint job will commemorate the aircraft pictured below. same paint scheme/decals and such.

heres the old horse in all her glory after 40+ years of endurement and service. my prayers go out to all the families and friends of the 6 marines that died in th tragic crash 2weeks ago that is still under investigation.

semper fidelis to all my fellow marines

Nice intro man!! I can see my shop in the first photo.

Re: KC's commemorative build

I would first like to personally thank you for your service. This build sounds like it will be cool and will mean a lot to many including yourself.

Re: KC's commemorative build

Very admirable Trav. I can't wait to follow this. My wife is a LCDR in the USN and we know the sacrifice well. I've been meaning to ask about your background. You summed it up. The military life is one of many opportunities, adventures, travels, and sadly...sacrifice. We're proud of our soldiers and salute those who serve...and those at home awaiting their safe return. Always know you have support behind you...wherever you go.

SMALL UPDATE***

my rpp goodies didn come in today so i was pretty bummed but i was able to fab up the new lower links. i cant really move fwd until my goodies get here.

first up was materials
jato rod ends..
8/32 allthread
1/4 aluminum sleeve

fist up remove stock plastic link
IMG_20120204_094252.jpg

next up placing everything to see how long the allthread needs to be
IMG_20120204_095833.jpg

after that i get a generall idea of how long the sleeve needs to be
IMG_20120204_100209.jpg

next run rodends onto the allthread and measure exactly how long the sleeve needs to be and trim as necessary
IMG_20120204_101502.jpg

after that just run one rod end off and put sleeve on and reassemble. make sure to double check that the links are same as origional as my build requires same lenght links.
Here it is all finished up decided to go with stainless sleeving instead of aluminum

Travis.... thank you for your service I'm sure your dad is more than proud of you.

I'm always following your posts & threads to see what your doing next to the jeep.

Did you receive NOOBS yota yet I'm jealous and looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Sure did mailman brought it to me this morning. The detail work on the bed is amazing! This is what will become of that rig. Gonna fab up a home brew cms w/ panhard and a front bumper. Already made links sleeved w/ stainless steel

Re: KC's commemorative build

while waiting for parts decided id use some paint I jacked from work so I could make the paint match exact to what the actual aircraft uses. Its a gloss gull grey. Its a 2 part poly paint which requires a mask..

Tom when the paint is cured the decals will be getting applied.

All the bodywork was done by richard aka pardonmynooB. He did an outstanding job on the bob and dropbed. And the lil somethin extra he did on the tailgate just sent this body over the top.

Looks good Travis. A lot of mixed feelings with this build. I'm sad to see the "D" go but it has sure killed way too many of our friends, ya know? I'm sure you'll make this build worth it.

Thank you for protecting our freedom"thumbsup"

This is going to be a sweet build.

Still gotta add "very small" a/c serial number. And put olaf on the hood above the number.

Input is welcome."thumbsup"
