The forward assist is for when there is dirt/sand/junk in the chamber or it just won't lock up the locking lugs on the bolt to the barrel.

Goes a little like this:
insert mag.
pull charginging handle or slap mag. release..

with the palm of your hand double slap the forward assist HARD twice.

then just aquire target, shoot, and repeat.

Zero the rifle @ 100 yards and it will shoot flat out to 250 yards.
Also if you can aford it get a piston'd upper. (they are 800 and up)
I never met a AR15 I didn't like, Well GEE I never met a gun I didn't like.

As far as new, forged lowers go, they are pretty much all the same, just pick one with the logo you like the best. IIRC, there are only 2 or 3 manufacturers of lowers. Maybe a couple more now, it's been a while since I checked. For example; A couple years ago I purchased 3 lowers, Stag, CMMG, and Double Star. The CMMG and DS obviously came off the same forging die and machine shop as they were identical except the logo. The Stag was very slightly different in the forging and machining. While all 3 work fine, the CMMG and DS had better fit and finish. But the Stag was $20 cheaper than the other 2 as well.

As far as LPK, or lower parts kits goes, DPMS is going to be the cheapest. It works fine albeit a little heavy trigger pull. I pretty much buy them for all the small parts as the trigger group can be upgraded later. I bought a CMMG kit once only to find out it was the same as the DPMS but with a higher price.

Now the barrel will be your next biggest part to decide on. Light or heavy, short or long, chrome lined or not or stainless.

Dang....just saw that Smith & Wesson has been running a rebate on their M&P15s....$100 off or 5 free magazines. Been going in since June and ends October 3

Cheaper Than Dirt has the $699 one for $959....http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/36913-55.html. That's the one that I have been looking at, but seeing it for $699.....hrrrmmm."thumbsup"

IMO...if you want to get optics anyway...theres no sense in paying the additional $100 for a carry handle/iron sight. You can get the $599 ($699 pre rebate) and then spend that extra $100 on your optics.

my smith & wesson i love this gun but if i get another one its going to be a piston upper.by the way thats not a bad price at cheaper than dirt, i paid $1010 out the door & like 3 years ago ,before price's shot through the roof

Well, I broke down today and bought a S&W M&P15 .223 Optics Ready. The local shop was running a good deal. I have ordered a TAPCO handguard, forward grip, and some used (easy on the wallet) Magpul front and rear sights for now. Still have an Eotech HWS in the near future.

I hate the gas block that is on this gun....it'll work for now. Might get a standard front sight and low profile gas block when I plan to remove it. I just like the look of having the front sights.

be careful when using the forward grip... allot of people like to use the forward sling or a forward grip to pull the rifle back into your shoulder. On a standard rifle that is a good method for getting a steady site picture but, on an ar style rifle it can actually affect your shot grouping. The way the Ar is constructed, when you pull back on the forward grip you are actually pulling the barrl instead of the stock. In the short term you will see slight variances in your shot group, over time you can actually bend the barrel attachement. Spending 5 yrs working in the armory at a reserve unit, the rifles with forward grips ALWAYS shot larger groups and shot lower than the ones that had never had 1 equiped. Dont get me wrong, they can be a nice addition, especially when working in an urban enviroment but, I wont ever put 1 on my personal rifle.

Congrats on the new rifle! You could always free float the front end and then the VFG won't pull the barrel down. I've got an A.R.M.S. #40 buis that I want to sell if you are interested.

I'll stick with my Magpul knock offs that I got. I just ordered my Eotech tonight....so irons (or in my case..plastics) won't be used much.
