Mamba Micro X vs. Sidewinder 4 with Sensorless

Been comparing the Mamba Micro X with Sidewinder 4 for a sensorless motor (maybe a full size Revolver) in a Capra.

It's very difficult to understand the differences seeing as the price is very similar and they have similar specs.

*Micro X = aux channel (which I like alot), 7.5V BEC, option to use a sensored motor

*SW4 = no aux channel, has a fan, 5V BEC, sensorless only

The Mamba Micro X seems like the obvious choice? What am I missing?

The Sidewinder 4 has 12 mosfets and the Micro X has 6. Between that, the larger wire gauge, and the fan, the sidewinder should be able to handle more power.

If space is a concern, the micro x is quite a bit smaller. The AUX wire is a good feature if you have a radio that can use it.

Both have a 2amp BEC and will likely need a external BEC if you are using a good servo.

I'll admit, It is kinda a hard choice between them.

Noob question; what is the aux wire used for and how does the radio use it?

The AUX wire is an extra wire that plugs into a third channel on your receiver. If you have a knob or button on the radio that can control the third channel you can setup the ESC to change it's settings on the fly with the input from the radio. A common use for crawlers is to set drag brake so when crawling you can set a high drag brake and then reduce the drag brake amount when driving between the rocks.

The Aux wire is what makes the "X" series of ESCs so awesome. The amount of versatility is amazing. I've got my Bomber set up so that the aux controls the drag brake, from 0-100 based on how much I turn the knob. On my Yeti, I went a step further, and set it up the same way, but at drag brake levels below 20%, it switches from F/R to F/B/R.

I just picked up a set of Monster X ESCs for the drag cars I'm building. In that situation, I'll use the Aux to control the torque limiting. This will allow me to dial back the punch control right from my remote so I can dial the car in for the current track conditions. I just love the flexibility.

Define “power”. Full size 540 1800kv sensorless okay on micro mamba? Not sure I can deal with losing the aux wire on SW4

Would you say the SW4 is the sensorless version of Mamba X?

BEC is not a concern for me.

I ran a standard size 1800kv Revolver from a MicroX for quite a while with no issues, never saw temps higher than about 130° either. Running a 2700kv Puller Pro Stubby from the same ESC runs a bit hotter, getting to the high 140's in the same application, so still acceptable. I just wouldn't plan on running a faster or larger motor than that.

Good to know! How do you like Revolver the combo?

How hot is too hot?

As Jim said, the Auxiliary Wire on the Mamba X is awesome! I'd get it over SW4 for that reason alone.

I never got my Revolver to work as smoothly as I wanted with the Mamba X.

Hi Jato, I am planning on using it on the Mamba Micro X (half the size and price of Mamba X). Any thoughts on that?

Agreed, I can't lose the aux wire functionality. I have a Mamba Monster X and HH PP 3500 in my bomber and love it.

I have a Micro X, but never used it because you have to use an external BEC which I can't stand.

I may be trying the micro X out here soon, since I’ll be getting a Holmes v3 servo that’s powered directly by the servo I won’t need to worry about the bec.

Both are good options for the revolver, hard to go wrong there.

It's been a love/hate relationship. The torque is exactly what I'd hoped it would be, enough to break parts on demand (more so after I switched to a MambaX and 4s.) It's very smooth... once it gets going, but the startup is a little more jittery than I'd prefer, though I don't know if I'd really call it cogging. The sound isn't that big of a deal in open areas, but running in a fenced yard nearly everyday, it starts to lose its novelty. I've swapped the Revolver in and out of my Wraith a handful of times (currently in the car) and am looking for something different yet again.

The MicroX found a home in my Capra and I think it suits it well. I don't plan to put the Revolver in the Capra though as I've been pretty happy with the HH PP Stubby in there. It may not have as much torque, but startup seems smoother, power is adequate, and it's doesn't get annoying after running 1 battery pack through it. I could see the Revolver being a good fit for the Capra because it has enough torque to overcome the Capra's high overall gearing, I just don't want to listen to it that often.

As far as temperature, I generally try to gear my cars low enough that neither the motor nor ESC exceed 140°, or about as hot as you'd want to touch, but word on the streets is that 160°-ish is safe.

I have liked my revolvers good torque for a heavy vehicle. It does seem to like having a small pinion on it for low rpm start up. otherwise it rocks back and forth, not really coging....hard to explain. It is noisy, enough to the fact that my friends ask me not to use it when we go on trail runs. The first esc company that comes out with a esc to make these run quiet I'm sure will get a lot of business.

Have a look at this video.

The ESC is running at 16KHz for startup then goes to a variable 24-48KHz.

That's a great idea! I have a Holmes v3 servo on the way and that would be the perfect servo to use with the Micro X. I'm not sure it'll be able to power a heavy rig like the VS4-10 without overheating though. I'll have to double check on that.
