Mamba Monster X with Castle 1515 2200kv pinion size for 3S

As an expat living in Indonesia getting bits and pieces for my TRX-4 Tactical can be a slow process with some overseas orders taking over a month to arrive. Often the shipping costs are higher than the price of the parts. I managed to get hold of a locally available new Mamba Monster X Combo with the 1515 2200kv motor for just over the US price. The combo included the sensor wire and Castle sensor harness which is nice and the motor is a genuine one which is nicer. This motor is too long for the TRX-4 so I have ordered one of the brass bumper mounts with the forward steering servo mount.

Has anybody used one of these forward mounts?

I was thinking about buying the Xtra Speed forward battery mount kits but they are quite pricey and the battery would sit pretty high. I'm guessing that the extra weight of the 1/8 size motor, combined with almost 4 ounces of brass bumper mount will give me a better balanced rig. I have already removed the spare wheel carrier which made a good bit of difference as long as the battery is mounted as far forward as possible in the stock tray.

Once it arrives I can move the servo out of the way to make room for the motor. I plan to reverse the standard servo mount to have a bit more reinforcement on the front part and then cut the bar on the rear which will give me plenty of room.

The only other issue is the pinion size. I need to replace the stock pinion as the 1515 has a 5mm shaft. So far I have done some bashing, rough trails and light to moderate crawling but hope to be able to do more difficult crawling. I'm planning to change out the body for a Pro-line Raptor body #3468 (if it ever comes back into stock at RCMart or Asiatees) and add some heavy metal diffs along with some decent tires and beadlocks.

Any suggestions for tooth count running 2S and 3S Lipo?

That motor is for 1/8 scale buggies, that’s why it’s too long.

The motor you will want is the 1406 series slate, available in different kv’s.

I understand that this is not the proper size motor but a 1406 would cost a lot to get here and take a long time as they come from the US. I don't mind doing the modifications required to use this combo as the extra weight over the front is a good thing in any case.

Hopefully low speed control won't be a problem. If it is, Holmes Hobbies will get a sale.
