mapp gas at home depot...how much$$?

I'm just curious about the price of this. I hear it's used to adhere metal to metal and wondered how much these things go for (tank plus torch)? I was in home depot and thought to check it out just for the hell of it but couldn't find it anywhere. I'm having someone build a frame for me and if the mapp gas kit is cheap, i may grab one to make some add-ons or something.

What do you guys pay for your mapp torch?

last bottle i got (2 weeks ago) was 12$ from Auto-Zone, just your standard yellow cylinder.

i think I saw Depot pricing around 15$ in my area of CT.

i have the torch kit and which reqires o2 aswell as mapp. it works good for thin guage stuff 1/16 to 1/8 . but i use a mapp only torch for brazing with saftysilv. i have gotten way more use out of the mapp only.

there is a mapp only torch kit too. thats what i have. absolutly no need for the 02 kit.

Sounds like a good deal, I think mine cost closer to $40-$50 at the local Home Depot.

About 40$ for the basic kit and up to 50$ for the better kits. The safty solder start up kit was 20$ for the flux and i think 1 oz of solder.

Most welding or refrigeration supply and repair places should be able to help you out with silver solder and flux. I got a kit by J. W. Harris Safety-Silv 45, but there are higher grades. It comes with the flux included for around $40.

I got my kit at home depot for around $50 aswell. I've found that the steel brazing wire and the flux they sell works pretty well too. And its cheap!

In what section of HD is this stuff located?? i asked the guy working there and he took me on a tour but never found the mapp or brazing wire.

Good? Bad? good enough? I'm doing any serious cage building, just little stuff like body mounts, shock towers, and bumpers.


There's only two left so if someone tells me it's good, i'm flying over there and getting it. I know my walmart takes 17 years to restock their tool-section shelves.

that is a mapp gas set-up. and from reading this thread it looks like a good deal. I've been using a regular propane torch on my stuff but I may go to wally-world and grab one of these just to have kicking around.

That is the one I use. I bought my solder at Praxair. I have brazed a fair bit of 16 gauge steel now and it works fine.

I have that setup, also. It works fine, but there are times a smaller tip and flame would come in handy. I just recently taught myself to braze, so it was a good starting point.

Those MAPP gas kits are good to start with or plan to not do alot of brazing. I only say that because they have changed the formula for mapp gas. Its called mapp-pro now. It doesn't burn quite as hot, and you use more gas to do the same weld. I have been doing refrigeration service for 13 years; turbotorch makes a great kit with changeable tips, from tiny tips to a 32 tip which will burn up a B-tank in about 30 mintues. The technology is in the tip!! It causes the flame to swirl like a double-helix, therefore the flame wraps around the tubes being brazed, heating the joint all the way around. They may cost more, but its performace!!

Ok it seems I know what to get and where to get it. I have one last question. I want to build a roll cage for my 1:6 JK Rubiclod. I mocked it up with aluminum tubing:

Of course i will have to switch to steel in order to braze but my question is will brazing 1/4" or 3/8" tubing hold ok?
