When Layne was with Mad Season, which is a great band in its own right, it wasn't long after Layne passed, that the bass player for that group died also.

John Baker Saunders (September 23, 1954 – January 15, 1999) was a founding member and bassist for the American grunge rock supergroup Mad Season, as well as a member of The Walkabouts. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama and later attended Providence College. Saunders began his career as a blues bassist, working with traditional blues artists in Chicago, such as Hubert Sumlin and Sammy Fender. He recorded and toured Europe with the Seattle-based band, The Walkabouts. Saunders also worked with the Lamont Cranston, in Minneapolis. In 1994, Saunders went into a Minneapolis drug rehabilitation facility, where he met Pearl Jam's Mike McCready. After completing treatment, Saunders and McCready returned to Seattle and formed a band called The Gacy Bunch, with vocalist Layne Staley and drummer Barrett Martin. They soon changed the band's name to Mad Season. Mad Season's acclaimed album, Above, released in 1995, was awarded a gold record for sales in the United States. It was the only album that Mad Season would record.

The fact that Mad Season can never be reborn saddens me almost as much as never hearing Layne with Alice again.

That really sucks. Chains has always been in my top 5 best bands of all time list. Layne dying was a waste and an end to some of the best vocals ever.

RIP. AIC is in my top 3. Its a shame, from what I heard about his celebrity rehab show was that he appeared to be working towards recovery.

RIP Mike. I was lucky to meet AIC when they were the opening act on the Clash of the Titans tour when I was in high school. They were all cool, but Mike and Jerry Cantrell shot the shit about guitar and bass gear with me and a buddy for probably 30 minutes. He was a class act. It's awful that addiction has taken him away from his family and loved ones.

I never watched the show but saw a clip on You Tube where his mother attended a meeting and spoke to the group...he was visibly moved and in tears.

He seemed to be in good spirits and wanting to continue his recovery. Seems that it's just too difficult a grasp to break out of.

EDIT: killswitch, I saw them on that tour as well. Opening act, got tormented from the get go by all the metal fans, but they played on, handled it like seasoned pros and killed it for an hour.

Wow! that's sad, another young talented person gone.
If those who the use/abuse recreational drugs and alcoholic beverages were made to be seen as evil, nasty, horrible and worthless people, the same way tabacco smokers are, maybe some more lives could be saved.
