mix and match sensored motor / esc question

I'm thinking I'm going to upgrade my Losi Rock Rey to a sensored motor and esc (preferably a water resistant combo). Is there any advantage to having both motor and esc the same brand? Any disadvantage to using different brands for the esc and motor? I'm thinking I want to stay in the 2800-3200 kv range for the Rock Rey but options seem limited on the motor front at the moment. Esc options don't seem that limited. That's why I'm wondering about mixing different brands together.

Thanks!

Yes you can mix and match different brands of motors with ESCs. There may be certain motors that will not work but those are generally going to be a motor you would not put into a crawler.

The only system the has the ESC tied to a motor would be the Hobbywing Axe system. This is due to the proprietary sensor cable for making it waterproof without the need for conformal coating etc. Every other ESC / Motor uses the standard sensor cable.

If you submerge your rig a lot or simply bash through lots of water at speed the Hobbywing Axe setup will be the most waterproof.

Many other ESCs such as the Mamba X are also waterproof but even they have disclaimers about completely submerging their ESC.

Thanks. Yeah, not using my Rock Rey as a full on crawler...mostly bashing, some trail, and just a little crawling. The slower speed control and torque is what I'm trying to gain, without losing top end speed. I only run it on 2s or 3s. I don't run it through water per se, but it does rain a lot here in the south. That, and the occasional snow bashing in the winter.

I would look into the Mamba X for that setup personally. I say this because you can run brushed or brushless and up to 6S battery while being "waterproof".

This ESC will allow you a large choice of motors without limitations. This way you can try out a motor from your research and suggestions. If you find it is not exactly what you want you have more options to make a change with the Mamba X. You also can adjust the throttle curve in the Mamba X. This way you can get a large motor for speed and dial in the throttle curve for when you want to crawl slow.

As for motor I would look between the Holmes Hobbies and Castle slate motors. Most likely you are going to want brushless so Holmes Hobbies Puller Pro brushless motors in the Kv you think you would want. I would say your stated 2800 to 3200Kv is a good place to start. For Castle look at the slate motors in the same Kv rating. Either of those brushless setups would be a great setup. Just use some dielectric grease on the motor sensor wires if it is going to get wet. Check and reapply before getting near water and you should be good to go. Just don't submerge it and let it sit under water while powered on. LOL
