Motor suggestions?

I am currently building two crawlers. One is the element enduro sendero. This one I was planning on going brushless. I already have a Tekin rx8 gen 2 from a short course truck build. I would if possible like to use that. So what I am looking for are recommendations on a motor to go with that esc. Oh I also have 2s batteries already.

The second crawler I am building is the Axial SCX II Jeep Cherokee. This one I was going to do brushed but would like to use the same 2s batteries.

So any recommendations on motor to go with rx8 gen 2? Or do you not recommend this esc? Also a brushed esc/motor that I can use 2s batteries?

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I can't speak to the Tekin ESC's because I've never owned or run one, but I hear good things. Having run other brushless systems in a number of my crawlers though (Holmes Hobbies), I'd say you'd wanna be looking in the 2200 to 3500 kv range, depending on how you intend to use the rig overall.

The "go-to" brushed set up around here starts with the Hobbywing1080 ESC. Super reasonable price, fully programmable, and just a super solid performer for brushed set ups. (I run three of these on different rigs). As far as a motor, I'm biased towards the Holmes Hobbies products. He supports this forum and the hobby in general, has great customer and technical support, and above all, produces an excellent product. You can get in to the budget Holmes Trailmaster series of motors for around $20, but can also spend up to $115 on the high end ones. They are ALL quality motors. If you intend to trail the rig, get in to mud, water, grime, etc, I'd go with the budget oriented Trailmaster series. I've run Trailmaster, Torquemaster, Crawlmaster series and been very pleased with each for their intended application.

The last thing I would recommend would be a migration towards 3S batteries. I think once you run any of your rigs on 3s versus 2s, you'll more than likely never look back. This also coincides with the Holmes mantra of "Volt up, gear down". "thumbsup"

Welcome to the site!

The RX8 is a big ESC since it's for 1/8th scale race vehicles. It should handle any crawler motor with ease, but I haven't used one so I'm not sure how smooth it will be. It should be fine. Tekin makes the best stuff.

For motors you can try a Castle Slate motor on the inexpensive side or go with something like a Holmes Puller Pro. Tekin's ROC412 is also an excellent motor, but I'm not sure if that will fit in an SCX10 II.

The rx8 is very similar to tekins crawler esc, the rx4. Only thing is yours is a gen2, which wont accept the 272 firmware, which includes the active drag and adjustable drag brake. But honestly i have a rx8 with the 272 firmware, and when active drag is on, i lose the low speed control. Other then that it's fine. Like others said it'll handle any motor you choose in a crawler. And you can go higher kv safely then tekins max motor recommendations, because our crawlers are geared so low and don't pull the amps like a short course truck does off the line.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll try the Tekin esc see how it handles. As for the brushed set up I already had the hobbywing 1080 in my cart. I’ll give the trail master series a try. Again thanks for the quick replies.

I would recommend the newer HH Crawlmaster Sport 550 15T. it is the same price low as the Trailmaster but is smoother due to the 5 segment armature. HW WP1080 and HH Crawlmaster Sport 550 about $62 total.

I actually bought the trailmaster 550 27t and the crawlmaster 550 15t along with the HW 1080 esc. Thank you.
