Thanks man! I have to admit... it took some serious thinking, and some deep breaths before I started cutting up the bed. But... once it was cut... there was no turing back!

Great look truck BTW: Truly there are not many of these out there that I have seen! "thumbsup"

Ok... So my drop bed version 1.0 ended up in the trash. It looked like sh*t and the more I tried to make it better... The worse it got. So it is now on to version 2.0 once I get more styrene sheets... I think. Kinda frustrated.

So.. as some of you may have seen... my first drop bed for my Hilux build was... well.. a total flop. So bad that I will not even post photos of it.

However.... I am happy to say that version 2.0 is going along MUCH better. Nothing is solidly in place yet... just taped so that I can get a good idea. It's not perfect, but it's my first time building something from total scratch.... so on to the pics. "thumbsup"

Still lots to do... mainly detail stuff, and then start putting it together permanently.

I have a 87 turbo yota in the back with a stepside factory after market bed and it does not have inner fender wells like a typical bed. If you leave those out youll be golden

About a day to late, and a few glued seams to late. O-well. I still think it looks good. "thumbsup"

Update!

Well... I FINALY got the body work done!!! ....... I think. :lmao:

And after a few trys at it... I got the drop bed done and in. "thumbsup"

Now... I know the fender wells are still there... after they were all glued in solid it came to light that they rear step sides did not have them. O-well. I still like how it came out. Alot of the detail's just do not show up will in the light and flat black, but trust me... they are there!

So after getting the bed on. I ran into a little problem when it came to putting the bed on. The SCX-10 shock's and hoops just did not work. At all.... so I went to RCBros website to order up a rear leaf spring kit. Unfortunately they are on backorder indefinitely. So... what to do?
This!

It's amazing what parts you can savage off of a old road car!

Now.. time to finish off some paint work... and start to think about how I am going to mount the body to the chassis. "thumbsup"

wow.. dude this thing has taken shape!! great work!! the bed looks great(even the fender wells) lol:lmao:.. cool to see one of these as a crawler!! cant wait to see whats in store!!"thumbsup"

paypal ready.. ;-)

and as far as body mounts you can use servo mounts on the frame and bolt through the bed.. clean and not very noticble:mrgreen:

Nice job man, you did it well.
I would say for a body mount. use a piece of aluminum and bend it in the correct areas so when mounted to the chassis sides it can be mounted using some black button head screws. Makes it hold up better to abuse.

That is kinda what I was thinking of doing. Depending if im gonna use some rock sliders.... witch I think I am."thumbsup"

Have you thought about leaving those inner wheel tubs out since it's a stepside bed?
Kinda like a Chevy

That's just what I was gonna say too...but I got to the party too late !!! "thumbsup"

Hey bud...I didn't know that you were gonna use that Rogue kit on an OG Hilux !!!

No worries though...the Rogue bed kits don't depreciate much....actually...most guys MAKE money on them when they sell them ! :ror:

If I would've known what you were using it on...I would've showed you how I did my drop bed in my WIDESIDE Yota.

I was originally wanting an OG Hilux bed for that project...but knew that it would be hard to find...and probably expensive.

So I got lucky and Matt (DINKY) hooked me up with some Big Bear Datsun bedsides....and it worked out about the same as yours...close enough for me anyways ! LOL

Here's how I did my bed....most of the stepsides that I've owned had no wheel tubs because the giant fenders act as the actual wheel tubs !

Looks GREAT though bud.....good job"thumbsup" !

Styrene Fabrication is like CRACK.......be very very careful.....because it's Highly ADDICTIVE !

LOL...thanks !

I'm pretty sure that I showed most of how I built the box part....in the build thread (I plan on getting back on this build later this week...hopefully!)

~WideSide Yota~

Now back to MSD's OG Hilux...(I'd LOVE to have one of these bad boys!)

What's next on this one?

Because they're never done....are they ?

On your rear shocks....alot of the time....you can get more shock travel, a longer shock and better articulation.....if you make a simple bar that goes from one side of the chassis to the other side......and then just attach your shocks to that....like this / \

That helps ALOT...when running drop beds.

Also...if you don't want to run your shocks like that....you can run a longer shock in droop...or semi droop....or reverse sprung...or a combo of any of those !! LOL (Lots of choices there !!)

Here's how I did this one with a drop bed:

It works great out on the trails....and flexes pretty well on my table too ! LOL

Well... my original idea was to use it! Went I did a dry run with it (taped together) I came to the sad realization that it was just way to huge compared to my bed.
I went back and forth with the idea of cutting it down to size, but in the end, I just used it for templates, and then put it all back into the bag, and put it away in my work bench. "thumbsup"

That is what I was thinking! I just need to find some shorter shock, or at least find some some internal springs that I can use with my SCX shocks that I currently have. "thumbsup"

As far as being done... far from it. I just have not had much time to work on the truck. I have been putting in some mad hours at work as of late. Pulled an 11 hour shift yesterday.

I just mounted the bed, and have done some touch up work here and there. Gonna work on making some sliders and a rear bumper next, mount the cab, and then I need to do some work with the steering... I am getting some wicked binding here and there... "thumbsup"

I know what you mean...I worked mech & elec maintenance for years and back when I worked at Alcoa...we pulled lots of Double's (16 hrs)...and worked 7 days a week for up to 14/15 months at a time !!!!

No time for any kind of life back then...but I was younger so I just didn't ever sleep ! :lmao:

Check your local hardware stores (mom & pop kind are the best).....alot of the times they've got drawers with assorted springs in them and you might luck out and find some that will be perfect for you there !"thumbsup"

Ok.. This is why I am not allowed to be near 100ft of a hobby store.

My LHS hosted a swap meet this mornign, so I figured... what the heck, why not? I am in need of a good servo or to. I'll go and check it out.

Came home with some lipo's, 4 servo's, some axial 1.9's, some nice Traxxas big bore shocks, some links, and some other various iteams. :lmao: Cleaning up my work bench, I came across a body that I forgot I bought some time ago for a build that never got off the ground.

Sooo........
