I bought one of these and a bearing kit also been contemplating it, over a cup of coffee. Driven it couple times, it needs smaller pinion gear to crawl well. I'm going to flip tranny like Harley did, the motor is running opposite of what it should, it's got some advance in the brushes, red dot is supposed to be positive. 2S lipo will work on stock ESC, I'l move battery forward and down too.

I've got an ECX Barrage 1/24 and it's very nicely built and designed but like all rc there are some things I would change. I love that it's got decent looking axles without worm gears, yay!

It can handle 2S lipo without BEC added. Harley has a nice little Youtube video on it and I've bought the Fast Eddy Bearing kit.

Things on my to do list for it are:
1) Tranny flip, including soldering positive wire from ESC to the side of motor with red dot as this will run the motor in forward direction giving more power and finer control.

2) Smaller pinion gear 10T or 8T to start with, 1/32 scale slotcars use press on pinions that might work (some plastic but mostly aluminum or brass) Losi Micro T pinion set will get down to 10T if you can find it anywhere.

3) Lower the body one hole front and rear....DONE

4) Bearings, here's Harley’s video overview, bearing installation how to and couple free modifications.

5) Switch to 2S lipo.

6) Move the battery up front.

7) Maybe better ESC with finer step control between each increase in throttle.

8 ) De-case and shrinkwrap ESC/RX unit for less weight and space.

9) Cut about 1.5 coils off each spring as BrakeWeight did to lower ride height.

10) Oil damped shocks would really help it by reducing bounce while crawling.

That's all I can think of atm. :)

Motor looks very similar in size and shape to these:
NSR King (long can) motors
NSR - Professional Slot Cars

Slotit Flat 6 and Boxer (long can) motors
Slot cars and accessories in 1/32 scale Performance Universal Spare Parts

Press on slotcar pinion gears are supposed to be same pitch as the Barrage spur gear, thanks Todd!

Body lowered one hole front and rear as per BrakeWeight's idea here, fits much cleaner, trimmed front wheelwells slighty:

Hey Natedog, if you cut 1.5 coils off, won't the shock cups fall out or at least look funny with the shock fully extended (as in tire dropped into a hole) and the coil not touching the cup or upper? Or will you also internally/externally limit the shocks?

The springs are under slight compression when installed (uncut). When cut at 1.5 coils it creates maybe a mm of play when fully drooped out. You’d have to have the truck at eye level to see it.

Hey, did you end up trying the new pinion? This one is probably leading my list right now, but that torque will be key.

It may have overtaken the Gelande for me, which seems to have fairly crappy response out of the box, I'm not sure if this one has that same issue or not, it sounds like it might?

Lots of nice hard body options in this scale... Tempting!
Looking forward to seeing your tinkering on this one.

Somehow missed your question, sorry. No, I did not too many projects. This truck needs lower gearing which some of the versions now have (forget which branded) by adding another gear to the transmission.

Yes, good quality start but I have too many projects and sold it just before Christmas. :)

DOH!
i know how that is. i got three irons in the fire right now... trying to finish before the fire! knowutimean? ;)

i have been tempted to get a desk crawler though. for a single C note its reasonable.

For what its worth I have 2 of these little Barrages. I have built servo transmissions out of metal gear servos. It takes the battery life to around 45 minutes on a stock battery and it makes the crawl ratio perfect. Have a set of RC4WD Goodyear MTR's on mine and Baja Claws on my sons. They are Soo much better now. Just need to work on some steering geometry issues with the bigger tires.

Care to show some more details and some pics of that servo transmission? I'm curious...

ME TOO.

I need a new transmission ASAP. Not sure what to buy.

IBEX transmission.

RC4WD R5 V2 transmission.

Or hunt for a 9T pinion.

I’d love to see a servo transmission??? What the heck is it?

I’d personally go with the Ibex/Sumo style tranny. I have one from an HBX in mine and love it. It’s like an ant crawling around. Not much wheel speed so choosing lines is more imperative.
