im looking for a motor for for my SSD Trail King, and as im new to crawlers i dont really know what to look for.

my plan for the Tral King is to use it as a trail runner with 1.55 wheels. i would want the battery to be the same as my onroad cars for simplicity (and to save money) if possible.
that would mean either 2S lipo or NIMH (the onroad cars is not completed yet).

i dont know if i should go brushless or brushed.

i want the motor to be quiet, because high pitched noises drive me nuts.
i have watched some videos on youtube where the motor would make a high pitched noise at low RPM, i dont like that.

Some of those videos, are just capturing the power-system's "Pulse-width modulation" noise....the higher the number of PWM, the less "capturable" sound u hear. Ive noticed for example, my HW1080 esc has adjustable pwm frequencies...at highest setting, the camera doesnt capture quite-as-much-as with factory settings, also, usually unless its ABSURDLY loud,... The human ear doesnt always pick up the same freq. As the camera's microphone does!

So dont be discouraged by YouTube videos! Also, every power system has SOME recordable whines...

Read-Up! Mod-On! Crawl EXCESSIVELY!

The motors you’re hearing are likely the revolver series. Until yesterday you couldn’t do much about it until Holmes released his new esc.
For brushless, The hobbywing fusion motors are dead quiet and smooth, but they’re large.. so space is an issue. Hobbywing axe systems also quiet and smooth. For a budget brushed setup the Hobbywing 1080 and an upper end holmes expert motor sets you back about $100, also really smooth and quiet. I’ve ran a lot of different setups now, just depends what you’ll use the rig for, what space allows and what your budget is

I also believe that the PWM modulation Frequency goes FARrrrrr beyond human-audible-frequencies! This explains why your dog may look at your rig funny as heck, or why they are geniunely scared of the thing....just throwing it out there

The noise also depends on the esc. I'm a caslte fan myself, but they are the louder escs. Tekin and hobbywing are both quite. Wonder how the new copperhead is?

On the ESC front you can get some that are silent, the Holmes Hobbies torquemaster BR-XL has a quiet mode and the Hobbywing 1080 has the ability to adjust the PWM frerquency (it can be setup to be quiet too).

For a quiet motor I'd suggest a 5 slot like a HH crawlmaster. Due to being on 2S and smaller tires you may want a faster motor (as the small wheels and lower voltage will be on the slow side). Dont let the turn count fool you, a 5 slot 13t is roughly equivalent to a 35t (3 slot).

ok i see with the motor whine. my sense of hearing is better than average, so i would definitely want to avoid the high pitch whine.
i dont know what motors they use in most of the videos i have watched, but it seems that most of those that make the whine noise, is brushed motors. i could be wrong though.

as i have just bought an car, i want to keep it on a budget, so i am open to suggestions. i just dont need the best of the best, most expensive of the expensive.

I'd be more worried about a noisy servo than a noisy motor. That sound is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

Post a video of a motor that's too high pitched for you, and then one that's tolerable. Might be easier to narrow down what you're looking for.

I just now installed a 20 turn 5 slot Tekin motor (I'm guessing somewhere in the 40+ turn 3 slot range). It's a super low end torque motor with a low high speed, so it doesn't get that high rpm whine. I don't know how to post a video here, but I can email it if you want.

yeah i had been thinking about the servo too, but i something in mind for that.
i have Savox servo's in my unfinshed onroad cars, but i know people said they tend to make noise. i went with Savox there, because these onroad cars would drive arround at a distance, so i wouldnt be standing up close anyway.
i have a drift car that has an Futaba servo which is very nice and silent, so i will look at a Futaba servo for my Trail King.

ok, i will post some videos when i find some.

i forgot to mention the whine i refer to, seems to come at low RPM's.

Thats very likely ESC noise as others mentioned.

This is noise from an ESC

yes, that is the high pitch whine noise im talking about. i would have thought it was the motor.

The rig in the video above is running a Micro Mamba X but almost all Castle ESC's sound like this.

Here's another video, this time with a Holmes Hobbies Torquemaster BR-XL ESC set to quiet mode (the blue K10 Ascender). At around 1:45 I also run my Wraith which has a Castle Mamba X.

EDIT: this might be a better example since I'm going slower (terrible 1 handed driving BTW)

your Ascender dont make the noise, but your wraith does.
good to have it cleared that is the ESC making the noise, i think i will look at ESC's from Holmes Hobbies or Hobbywing. i think that had those where i bought the Trail King.

The motor works like a speaker for the ESC, some motors amplify the noise more then others, just as some ESC do. Castle esc's and any outrunner motor like the revolvers will be the worst of the bunch. But with the right ESC even an outrunner can be quiet. For brushed motors usually increasing the modulation (pwm frequency setting on a Hobbywing esc reduces the noise, or at least the perception of it. A 21t brushed 550 or 27t 540 motor with low gears works pretty good. I always recommend using the lowest gears you can figure out how to install and a 2200kv brushed motor. Then bringing the speed up with more voltage. For brushless motors they will whine with the castle ESC's and the only options I know work well are not completely polished.

im looking at this combo; Hobbywing QuicRun WP1080 ESC and motor Holmes Hobbies CrawlMaster Sport 5 slot 13 turns motor. is this a good combo?

I think so, I was running that setup in a rig a few months back and it worked well. I'm kind of picky with electronics and that setup wasn't really lacking anything and it should be about as quiet as a crawler can get.

Turn the frequency all the way up on the 1080.

I could hear the sound on mine with stock settings. I just changed it, and it's no longer noticeable. Apparently it can make the motor run hotter, so watch out for that.

So, yes, I think that will make a good combo.
