Long time RC enthusiast since I was a kid. In the 90's I got pretty heavy into it. Sold everything off in the early 200's. Fast forward to today, I bought a Losi Baja Rey King Shock Raptor edition and fell back into it. My buddy recently purchased a Redcat Gen 8 and naturally the crawling scene caught my attention. Never done it before. Now I own a Capra RTR. Took it out a couple times and I'm seriously hooked. In fact, he and I are meeting up this weekend for a crawl session when I get back home from traveling.
I've been lurking the forums and pounding the search button for a while now. I even hit up a couple guys with some PM's and got a ton of great info. The rig is completely stock at the moment but there are parts waiting for me when I get home tomorrow. Wheels, tires, shocks, portal weights, body panels, lights, a spare motor, couple batteries and some scale stuff. I wanted to start a thread of the build. I used to be a kit guy but I do enjoy the RTR feature these days. They seem to be a lot better than when I first started out.
I know you guys have all seen a stock Capra before but it'll change soon enough. Enjoy the build thread. I know I will enjoy updating it.

I don’t know what it is about these Capra’s , but they are just so much fun to crawl with. They just climb over shit they look like they should never make it up and or over. Congrats on your purchase.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed mine! I was in the same situation, long time RC Racer everything from mini-z's to 1/8 Nitro buggies and finally HPI Baja's that my son (Fricker08) and I used to race. This was my first RC in quite some time and since then I have added the Axial SCX10.3 to my collection.

Yeah... I'm in serious trouble fellas. And by trouble I mean I'll be going in debt with the Capra. :lmao: Went on a crawl fest with my best friend today (who recently purchased a Redcat Gen 8) and I can honestly say that I had more fun today than I ever have with a RC transmitter in my hand. I've ran and raced them all back in the day and crawling takes the cake hands down. I took the advice of others and upgraded the wheels/tires first. Man did that make a huge difference. I have some shocks on the way and another motor as well. I might be adding more features soon.

Here's some pics from today.

Hey I thought I recognized that area! I’m down in Wilsonville. I’ve got a Capra scx10 iii and a trx4. Spring park, high rocks and Lucia falls are my go to spots.
Glad you like the Capra, it’s been my go to rig since I built it. Let me know if you want to meet up sometime.

I absolutely want to meet up sometime! That was my first time at Spring Park. I want to check out High Rocks soon. I haven't heard of Lucia Falls (for crawling) yet. I'll check that out online.

Right on, I’ll Pm you my number and see if we can’t arrange something one of these days. Spring park is hard to beat for me. High rocks is ok, better when it’s not completely flooded but still a spot to run. Lucia falls is a bit of a drive but it’s a blast too.. as long as you don’t drive your car in a pool like me..doh

:lmao:

Send the number! I'll reply with mine. "thumbsup"

OK. I think I'm done ordering some stuff for a while. A quick rundown of the items I'm waiting on to be delivered.

HH Crawler Sport 16T
HH TorqueMaster BXLR
Reefs 500 for steering
Reefs 99 for DIG
Some scale items: fully dressed 3D printed scale LSX engine from JE Designs and a few small items.
Spektrum 5 channel Rx
Spektrum 5 channel rugged Tx
Desert Lizard shocks (orange)
Portal weights
Tools, car stand and soldering iron
Hi Clearance links (don't really need but wanted to try)
Carbon fiber panels (matte black)
and a few other small things.
Thought about getting some 3rd member brass but I think I'll see how things go first.
About the only thing I really need help is what motor pinion to start with. I thought I'd go with an 11T first. I have a Treal trans brace in my wish list in case I need to go smaller.
Could really use some input on the pinion suggestions.
Other than that... It's time to sit back and wait for the UPS, USPS, FedEx guys to wear out my driveway.

Some of the parts came in already so I'll get them installed next week and post up some pics.

Thanks for the help so far!

Stay tuned.....

I have a kit and goodies ordered as well. Seems most everyone goes 11t because that’s the smallest that will work with the stock housing. Vitavon makes an aluminum housing that lets you go down to 9t. They are available on eBay and come from China but they seem to be very highly regarded. 80$-ish. My plan is to start with my crawl master expert 20turn/11t pinion combo and go from there.

Curious on the carbon fiber panels. Did you research how the carbon fiber holds up to scratches? I would think it would look awesome until it’s first tumble down a rock face but could be wrong. Same company makes some really good looking carbon fiber in black/blue/red. Love the look but not sure about scratches.

You can go to a 9 tooth pinion if the motor has 2 sets of mount holes. Use one from each diagonally and it rotates the motor closer in. I believe all the HH motors allow this. I run this with a 16t and am very happy with it

That’s who I ordered the carbon fiber from. For me, it only has to look good once (for the pictures). After that is all about FUNction.

But yeah, the first tumble is gonna make me cringe a little. lol

Finally finished the build. Wishing I would have started with a kit instead of a RTR but at least this way I got to drive it stock and figure out what I wanted.

The list of mods is long and distinguished. So I'll just throw some pics up for now.

Enjoy. And thanks for all the info (search button) on this site!

Great customizing, love the motor detailing and the colors chosen...

Carbon fiber and matte orange... SWEET!

"thumbsup"

That is one sweet Capra! For now my panels will remain in the paint they came with, a custom air brushed skull pattern. However, my KLR 650 is wrapped in Carbon, and the Capra will be next when, the time comes. That probably wont be long since my daughter was step climbing tonight. Needless to say the Capra got plenty of turtle time on the concrete.
