So I have finally found my permanent tattoo guy. I saw his work and was blown away. I have seen alot of local guys work and had lost faith in tattoos, but come to find out, Oregon just has alot of hacks for tattoo artists. I was looking for the right realism guy to do these next few pieces and this guy couldn't have made me more happy. Hopefully we can develop a good relationship because I can offer him help he needs and he would be a good guy to apprentice under:mrgreen:

I specificaly asked for almost all shading and some mild outlines in skin color to make it look real and more like the original piece. I am excited to see what it looks like when it is healed

Getting it done:

wow that definatly some nice ink work! its hard to find good realism tattoo artists but looks like you did for sure..

now, becuz some one has to say it..... must be fun to have some portable porn that u can take any where... ur never gonna get lonely now "thumbsup"

wow, great work! I really like that Tattoo. The skin tone came out very clean. "thumbsup"

Yea when you do pin-up's you don't do outlines, you do "Blood-Lines". Any portrait is 98% shading and 2% out lining.

So you are trying to become a tattoo artist? It's a very long and expensive road my friend;)

Long... Yes, Expensive... Depends on who you know. I have looked into it a little and now am making a good relationship with this guy. He said that he has only ever had 1 apprentice and said that he would teach me. This dude is super cool. I know it wont be cheap to get into, but it has been something I have wanted to do since I was a little boy. I dont need to be super famous or rich from it. I just want to do something I love and be a respected artist. There are ALOT of hacks out there tattooing people and I would love to be a good enough artist to take business from those who shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

I want to do tattooing but my artistic skills blow. Better i get them, not give them for me.

He put down some good work.

Very nice. You can't trust just any hack with that kind of work.

I'm not sure I would want a pair of bare titties on my lower arm, no matter how lovely they may be. I have a pie tattooed on my leg with a vag sorta hidden in it and I kinda regret it. I'm not sure if I regret it because there's a pu$$y on my leg or just because it's a really substandard tattoo, but I do regret it a little.

Tats are certainly something you want done by a person you can trust, regardless of price. I hope he works out for you long term as its always nice to have go to artist.

that's an awesome ambition. I've always thought tatoo artists were freaking awesome (the good ones anyway). I know how hard it is to stick one needle into someone (IVs, injections, etc), and to be able to do it multiple times, and make artwork out of it... very very cool in my book.
myself, I am a huge pansy when it comes to tattoos. not sure why, I let all my nursing friends practice IVs and shots on me, but am terrified to get a tattoo... figure that one out, haha.

I've been a tattoo artist for 21 years. I hate needles to! But the needles you are talking about and what we use are night and day. You use hypodermic needles, we use needles like acupuncture needles in a since. They are just grouped into different layouts to do line work or shading. Our needles have different tapers to the ends of them as well, Long, Short, BugPin, ect.....

I have noting against people wanting to get into our industry but I think to many artist hand out apprenticeships now. They see it as free help in the shop, someone to do the bitch work so to say. This is why there are so many "Hacks" as you call them "Scratchers" as we call them out there.

I can teach a monkey to tattoo, but to be good at it is a different story. Hopefully Chris he will be a good teacher to you and you will put 150% into it.

We tattoo because we love it, breath it, and live it. And the $ is good:mrgreen: Don't do it because you want to get rid of the hackers out there, they will always be around.....Do it because you love art, because you want to make people happy with a mark that will last longer than they will, because you want to better this industry and yourself.

Expect to drop $3K+ just on equipment. If you need advice on what is and isn't good stuff to get hit me up. I'm sure your teacher will tell you one thing but in this industry we listen to each other. We watch what is working for the big guys. In tattooing you are as good as your equipment! A good machine will run $300+ and most of us have 10+ machines. (I have 18) A good power supply is a must! (And they are not the same kind we use for chargers!) And the ink you use will make or break your work!

If I can help you out Chris let me know. I have contacts all over the US. And I have accounts with every big supplier for equipment. (Most will not sell to you unless you own a shop or can prove you have been working at a shop) I have extra everything if you wana do some trading at some point;-)

Also Chris, I surprised that your artist doesn't have his machine wrapped! That's not very sterile! You should sign up for classes through the CDC and the APT (Alliance of Professional Tattooist) and Red Cross for cross contamination and blood born pathogens, first aid and CPR."thumbsup" We are at high risk with the blood we deal with everyday!

Thanks for the advise man. I definately LOVE art of all forms. I want to do it because I love it. Pusing hacks out would be a nice bonus. I never thought about it seriously until I met this guy and he kinda let me see that there is hope to become a good artist. And with how anal, and critical I am with every detail being absolutely PERFECT(Well with art only, not my builds lol) I would not settle for anything but the best when it came to my ink going onto someones skin.

I am definately far from the most artistically tallented, but I have a better eye than most. And from what he told me, that it is 10% artistic, and 90% technical, it gave me more hope. I see how you guys do it and it totally looks like something, that if I put alot of hard work into, I think I could make a decent name for myself. I love what I do now, but I also dont like having a boss. Mentors I like, people bossing me around gets me into trouble:mrgreen:

I will definately take some time to ponder/entertain his offer. I was a little flattered because he made it sound like he doesn't normally teach. But we hit it off and were alot alike, so I think this should work out well. I just don't want to jump into something that could effect someone elses life forever unless I was 110% sure I could dedicate the time to do it well.

Man, I guess i saw this post to late..your finished pic and during pic is gone or just wont load

I just got another tat this may. I know the guy that owns the place and deal great work on 1 of mine...but this time it was an easy tat and im not to happy with it. Im getting another one in sept. Im not sure if i should stick with him..i THINK he is known..and ive seen alot of his work..but this last tat just has me wondering if i should go to him or go somewhere else...Which leads to me to...how do you know if the person is a good artist?? (im willing to travel)

Research!!!! If the artist did a bad tattoo on you don't go back!!!!!!!! Why would you go back to someone that put something on your body FOREVER and fawked it up???? It doesn't matter if he is known or not!

Look at the artist portfolio, ask people where they go and why, NEVER SHOP FOR A TATTOO OVER PRICE!!!!! (you get what you pay for!), find a artist that likes doing the style of tattooing your looking for, and traveling to a artist is a good thing to! I've driven 14 hours to get tattooed by Josh Woods. Look on sites like Ink Nation to see a lot of artist.

And remember to tip your artist 20%+"thumbsup" Remember that most artist work for someone and only get 50-60% of what they are charging you for the tattoo, the shop gets the rest! And if the artist has been tattooing for less than 3 years they might only be making 30-40% of what they do! So that $200 tattoo you got, the artist only made $60-120 of it!

People get to worried about price of tattoos and end up going with the artist that is the cheapest.....then get a crappy tattoo and wonder why! A good artist makes $100-150 a hour. Big name artist can make $300+ a hour! Brandon Bond in Atlanta has a $1500 mininum for his work!

Where do you live and I can help you find a great artist"thumbsup"
