Well It's time to look for a surface radio. Just broke down and purchased a SCXII builders kit.
A number of my friends have crawlers and bring them out when on the 4wd trails when we stop to camp.

I currently have a JR r756 PCM 75Mhz and it controls two of my old cars.

The new radio will need multiple vehicle option. Multiple channels not important at this time, but never know.

I have a Traxxas 6507R in my Slash I won in a raffle, but no multiple car option there.

My air radio is a Spektrum DX9-B, I know they offer one, just not sure how reliable it is or if easy access the menus are.
I have no problems with my Spektrum.

I would like see what are my options out there right now and if any issues with them?

Thx

My go to radio is a Spektum DX4R Pro. I have owned if for years and have had no problems with it. Prior to this radio I ran a DX3R Pro and the only reason I upgraded was for the 4th channel. The down side is the RX are $50.00 a piece. When 2.4GHz radios came out, I purchased a Spektrum and have been using them ever since.

When I got my TRX6, I needed a 6 channel radio. I picked up a Radiolink RC6GS. It is not that bad of a radio, and a 6-channel RX is $16.00. If I had to guess, I have probably owned this radio for about a year. And have had no problems with it. I really like the 3-position switches.

As an owner of both a Spektrum DX5 and a FlySky FS-GT5, it's Flysky all the way.

Spektrum DX5C + Rx: ~$170 USD
SR515 receiver: $65 USD

FlySky GT5 + Rx: $67 USD
FS BS6 receiver: $22 USD

Beyond the cost factor-- and I mean, the FlySky is half the cost of the Spektrum-- there's the programming. The wheel on the DX5C is borderline terrible, same for the touchscreen on the Rugged.
The Pro steps well into the money of Futaba/Sanwa/KOPropo, so it's not even a consideration for me. The programming on the FlySky is so simple the manual is basically a small fold-out card.
Disabling the AVC on the Spektrum 6100 receiver took me two days and half a dozen YouTube videos. You can also add a LiPo pack to the FlySky for about 10 bucks, no messing with wiring.

Spektreum sr3100 3ch reciever usually less then $20
No avc to mess with. Love these with my dx5pro

Setting up some settings like MOA dual motor mixing is not intuitive. But works good once you figure it out.

I don't like the dx5c very much. Programming is too limited in comparison. But it still Has all the basic trims and mixing I think.

I like what I'm hearing on the Spektrum. The the transmitters?of the RX not big deal, just wonder if a two channel or other RX can be used with transmitters?
I do like that the Flysky can be upgraded where battery is concerned.

Now I know I've been away for what...20 years Wow! how time flies.
What does AVC stand for?

Avc is steering auto correct based of a gyro. It might help driving fast on slippery surfaces or loose dirt.. But for crawling it makes your steering servo turn randomly.

The spektrum TX can run on 2s lipo. I replaced the AA sled with a homemade dual 18650 sled.

There are Life batteries that I think plug right in also. Some have a charging port if you drill a hole in the battery door.

If I was starting out with no modern surface radio I'd go with a flysky 100%. Simple, cheap and just flat good. My airtronics mt4 cannot be replaced for use on MOA and it's resolution is superior to spektrum in all my other rigs but flysky is on par with it. No need to program throttle curves to make rigs crawl slowly when the radio is sensitive enough to allow it.

I have never used anything but spektrum or stock radios. I never used a flysky radio before. A lot of people have them and I don't see many complaints.

I’ve only owned rtr radios (Traxxas, axial, element) and now a Flysky gt3c and a Flysky gt5.

navigating the menu, and changing settings on the gt3c is very confusing, and I don’t intend to use it much. It’s also only 3 channel which limits what it can do, i can’t use it on my Trx4 for example, since it has two diff lock servos.

I’m happy with the gt5, price is good, receivers are cheap, and navigating the menus is very simple. Setting end points is easy, reversing, etc super nice. The steering knob feels a little cheesy, but I don’t hesitate to recommend it.

Eventually I want to try a different radio brand (either futaba or spektrum). Leaning towards spektrum as I was pretty happy with the rtr dx3 that comes with the 10.3. I also like the idea of being able to use the firma 40 Esc/receiver combo in rigs that don’t require heavy duty power systems.

I use the flysky gt5. It's a great, low cost radio & I see no reason to look for anything else. As for the AVC feature, that can be easily turned off on the transmitter.

Best 400.00 radio in an 80.00 box I ever purchased was the Radiolink RC6GS (V2)

Full mixing on all channels. 2-4s capable (Tx battery) SBus/PPM and standard rx control available options.
can run up to 1800 ft (been checked by many)
10 model memory being its one limitation imo. but it does 10.

Telemtery on the new V2 Firmware, 2 thumb buttons on the handle.

Downside number 2 is its a bit bulky and not gr8 for 1 hand driving, needs a thumb paddle for the steering wheel and it looks like an old Spectrum.

But for 80.00, I have not found a radio close to its abilities for less than 400.

I use my Nomadio Reacts on my No Prep rigs, but would not have 2nd thoughts about running a 60mph 132ft with it. I know I wont lose connection. And its a great radio for crawlers other than the ability to single hand drive.

Agree with this...
Including the old looks :lmao:
But for functionality it's the best for it's price
High voltage range for the rx (up to 10v)
The built in telemetry capability allow to read the car's battery voltage and RSSI from the Tx in real-time
And on top of the Tx (covered by rubber plug) there is a metal 1/4" thread (standard for photography equipment mount) that can be used to attached a small camera or mobile phone holder

Aye. Packed full of features.
Those you mentioned are the Saugage Gravy ontop of a good Chicken Fried Steak. And I really hammer on china knockoff stuff.

however, every once in a while there is a Gem in the rough.
This is it imo.

Would like to see the antenna moved to the front so it can point down or straight out. Should be an easy mod I've not checked out yet. perhaps even on the backside near the front would work.
