New vs old Maxx Shocks

I'm gathering parts to build a Clod / NN crawler. Struggling to find shocks I like on the cheap. I'm wondering if anybody knows if the new Traxxas shocks with the grey bodies are any different than the original maxx units? I know Big Bores are a better choice, but they cost a bunch more, and I hate to buy 8 to get 4.

I have the originals from my T-Maxx. Is the problem with blown caps an issue at slow crawling speeds, or could I use these with no problems? If anybody knows of something appropriate with threaded bodies that can be found on the cheap, please let me know. I love the Dynamite (Losi clone) shocks I put on my Maxx, if only I could get them in a package of 4 instead of 8.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help, it never occurred to me to look at buggy rears (duh!)

I read somewhere on this board that the Hot Bodies shocks were prone to leaks, but it could have been one bad experience.

The newer Maxx shocks have an improved cap design that's less likely to blow off, and uses X-rings rather than O-rings for better sealing. They're much improved. The rebuild kits all come with X-rings now, too.

New cap design is what I was looking for. I've seen these going pretty reasonable and ebay compared to the big bores.

i read in xrc that all the new gray colored plastic traxxas has is supposed to be stronger and take a harder beating. but i just read the rag, no experience myself.

To add to the confusion, Traxxas is making the gray parts out of black plastic now as well. Look for the castellated caps on the shocks, those are the new design.
