newbie buying advie

Hello - I have a chance to buy some parts from a friend. Berg axles and an xr10. I hear both are discontinued.

Are parts readily available for both? What is the connection between berg and the xr10? Are these good starting points for building a "comp crawler"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated- I don't know a thing! Just want to get into the crawling without "wasting" too much cash on stuff that is outdated.

If there are better suggestions to getting into the crawling I'd love to hear the ideas.
