Or you could do all the fitting & prepping at home, skip the drilling and just clamp it, then get jasons welder and if he isnt able to make it over there himself, I could swing by to set that thing on fire instead. "thumbsup"
 
I'm tellin ya.. If you do all the fitting, drilling & bolting at home you can drive it to any exhaust shop to have them weld it in under an hour.

If you want to stick the sliders in the back of the truck and have them do all the fitting, prepping, drilling, welding, etc.. Its gonna cost ya. Nobody wants to do somethin for nothin.

You could do the labor at your house then drive it somewhere & point a finger at where you want welded. They'll be happy that all they have to do is pull a trigger and you save a lot of money but, you gotta be willing to crawl under there.

what welding prep needs done?
grinding/sanding down the metal to bare?

If bolting, I think I can do that with help.

That's why I'm nervous to do this shit myself because I don't know shit! :roll:
 
If it was me, I'd bolt & tack or lose the bolts & double the amount of welding. I'd like them to come off someday if it needed it. No bolts = longer time to cut them off.
 
Here's how I would do it..

1) get together with a buddy, get under there & fit the slider.. Figure out about where you want it, clamp it on. Get out, look at it.. Decide where it needs to move and reposition.. Look again. Ok, it looks good. Go under and scribe where it is with a scribe or flat head screw driver. Also, scribe the bolt holes. Remove the slider.

2) check for brake/fuel lines and drill half way through the rail, look inside. If all clear, drill rest of way. Do that on all the holes. Put slider back on and check to see if it still looks good. If it's a little twisted.. Enlarge holes in slider and adjust. When you have it where you want it, bolt it down good. Grade8 hardware, flat washer on the front, flat washer & lock washer on the nut side.

3) just before welding, start at the edge of the slider flange where it meets the rail and flapper wheel or large wire wheel (grind) a 2" long section of frame rail & slider where they meet. Remove any coating off of the rail to bare metal and any coating on the slider to bare metal. Move over 6"-8" and repeat. Do this on this bottom of the rail. I would increase your gap to 12"-14" on the top & only in areas that are easy to get to with a cutoff wheel.

4) clean & paint/coat

5) drink beer
 
so, a tack weld can be undone (melted?) or has to be cut?

Ideally it would be cut but, it could be torched but, things nearby will get torched as well.

A tack weld is just a generic name for a small or short weld. Its a weld like any other really. In this context anyways
 
lol, no... on my 1:1 Toyota 4Runner.

Am I crazy? Those look painted to me. Are those the actual ones? If you're really planning to use them as sliders you might want to consider beefing up the mount bars. Unless you're just going for looks...like the ones on my truck. :shock: Mine offer zero protection.

Hmm.. Now that I look at johnnys pic again, I see what you're saying. They looked pretty beefy when I seen them in person but, maybe I missed it. I thought the flange went all the way down the rail, hence my welding instructions/suggestions.

Who makes those sliders?

Edit: they do look a little show and not so much go in the picture you posted johnny. Do they come with anything else? No biggie.. I mean, Imma son of a bitch when it comes to choppin up steel, we'll just have to figure out what we want to add, where & how many. We should be able to drop that truck from 5ft onto some rocks and have no nody damage!

they're supposed to do work... I agree the mounts look thin but the rails themselves are beef. I guess they will go bolt on till I can get new mounts made.

Anyway, 2 seats ala Trey baby!

I'm about to give up on mounting these things. I'm almost ready to find someone who is good at it and ship it to them and pay them to do it. I got two mounted but the other two I can't get, I wonder if it's because of the foams...
 
I feel your pain man.. I'm not the man for that job.

VP KMC enduros & TSL XL's?

I think these guys cut the foams on theirs.
