I used to big into rock crawling with a Jeep in Colorado, kids and where we live prohibits it very often. so this will be a great outlet for the same fun. My question is I do not see anyone building crawlers out of nitro trucks. Is there a reason or what? Thanks for the help want to make sure i buy the right thing to start with. any sugestions would be great....Thanks WhyHike

Nitro just doesn't do well in crawling. It can and has been done, but it's costly and still doesn't end up as good as an electric. You can't get the torque, low end control, and just reliability in general out of nitro like you can electric motors.

Spend a little time reading through some of the sections on here, and looking at the galleries in each section, so you can get an idea of which way to go on your crawler. There's an endless supply, as well as all the big name vendors in this hobby, all right here on one forum, so you've definately come to the right place. Spending some time on here reading and looking will save you a ton of money and headache later on once you get started.

Trust me, I was big into 1:1 wheelin as well, even VP of my club here in this area, and have now gotten just about away from that end of it to mess with these things. They're super addictive once you get one set up good.

Yep, like MC said, they just dont provide the control at low throttle that electric motors give. For me, the first RC I built was an electric...for this simple reason that they are EASY to maintain. A bit of work, and your worn electric motor is as good as new again.

Also, on different crawlers, electric motors can usually be mounted quite a bit lower (especially on motor on axle style rigs) which will provide a MUCH better center of gravity....an aspect that is quite important in this part of the hobby.
