Who uses this setup and why is it used?

I've seen heavy shock oil with hard springs.
I've seen no springs at all with heavy shock oil but never a NO OIL setup.

I ran 2 seasons with dry shocks and took 3rd for the season I ran NBRCC series. If you get the right springs you'll get no bouncing and it'll work. If you don't it'll bounce all over the place as stated by vonclod. People couldn't believe how well this rig worked with dry shocks. Just put a drop or 2 in the shock so it has good movement and then every once in a while add a few more drops"thumbsup"

If you run without a filled shock can, you still need to coat the internals of the shock with oil so that it moves freely.

What he said. I did dry shocks with springs & the shocks didn't move. Put a few drops in them, still didn't work as smooth as others. I use light oil (like 15wt) Smooth as a baby's butt.

I tried the no oil setup and worked great.
Did try the droop setup as well but found that the absence of springs couldn't keep the tires on the ground and had the tendency to flip when sideheeling.

Regarding the no oil setup:

-i'm thinking of using 5wt or 10wt oil in there just to keep it smooth and run very light springs to allow the suspension to move when going through edges using dig.

Anything else i should know about no oil setups?
Now i run it as high as i can and use the light springs and no oil to lower the COG when the front tires pull first.

i know rc bros say that when you use their leaf kit they recomend either not running the shocks or if you do dont run springs or shock oil so that might be another reason

Well, leafs are springs. So, the shocks only serve the purpose of damping....not damping and suspending like a typical coilover."thumbsup"

a few sets of my scaler shocks are oil free, but it's because it all leaked out. :lmao:

It still dampens enough with the right springs, as long as there's enough oil inside to lubricate the piston and restrict it a little bit.

I might do this with my wraith because the oil is just pissing me off... Cant get the right amount and it always screws itself up so...

Is it correct to say the heavier the oil weight the stiffer the shock? Is softer better for the front and a little heavier in the rear?

"Stiffer and softer" are properties of the spring. The viscosity of the oil effects how quickly or slowly the piston travels through the shock body.
