I am wondering how the novak 21.5 crawler motor compares to a 55t brushed motor. I am new to crawling and have been reading lots of peoples setups and notice that many people are running brushed. Is this because it is cheaper and crawling is not about top speed so why spend the extra $$ on brushless? Are there other advantges to brushed in a crawling application?

For the most part brushed motors tend to be better than most brushless motors for the low speed control and ability to handle water if you run in the wet. That said the Goat brushless motor/esc combo is better in every respect except it will be destroyed if you run it into water. I have run the 18.5 goat motor system for a while now and it works great. The cost of the brushless motors and their inability to be run in water is likely what makes them less popular.

do the brushed motors seem to provide better braking then a brushless motor. I know alot of guys that race still preferrer brushed because they like the feel of the drag brakes better

I have the goat in my scale truck and I generally stay away from stupid amounts of water but it has a lot of wheel speed and great torque. I also ran a 55t for a while with the rooster crawler and haven't noticed a difference in low speed control. If anything the brushless 18.5 motor is better in low speed control. Whatever you choose good luck"thumbsup"

I'm running the Goat 21.5t package. I have a n AX-10 geared down with a 12T/87T and have instant power & wheel speed when needed. I changed out from a Mega 400/15/6 on a Quark 33 ESC. There is no comparison -the Goat out performs hands down. The drag brake on the goat shows instant & solid holding power. It is the gripping traction of the tires that limit the ability to hold at extreme downhill angles.
The Sensored Goat Brushless motor has a very fine rotational control - unlike the Mega Sensorless motor. The HAll-Effect sensors on the motor allow the ESC to calculate the precise position of the armature- hence the fine rotational control.

If you can afford the difference in the motor / ESC setup, Go with the Goat. I have not looked back at my decision to upgrade - it was the correct choice for me.
