What's the benefit of having overdrive or underdrive gears in my Axial crawler?

overdrive & underdrive gears... Why?

With the front tires spinning faster than the rears while in 4x4 the rig will turn better and the rear axle will not want to drive under the chassis as bad.

I think the increased tire wear is minimal at best. The rocks will hurt the tires more than the overdrive will. I think it's a great mod. My rig turns super tight, partly due to this mod.

It's just the different ratios that Axial sells. The stock ratio is 38/13. Overdrive would be 36/14 and Underdrive would be 43/13.
Like packman says, choose the ratio to best suit the speed of your crawler.....for example, my crawler was a bit slower than I would have liked, so I went with overdrive in the front.
It's a great and cheap mod.

SlashBasher, they are also more heavy duty than the stock gearset also.

i already know i'm a moron when it comes to rc stuff, but how is the affects on the transfer case/transmission? i know that if this is done on a full size crawler, it will tear up the gears inside the transfer case in a very short time.

Full size rig = 4000+ lbs for most.
RC crawler = 6 lbs for most.
Big difference. It doesn't tear anything up on a RC crawler.

I have the stock 13/38 in the rear and decided to overdrive the front with the 14/36 gear, works great! I was a little worried that it would be a big difference and the back tires would skid a little since the front wheels are turning faster than the back but while crawling you don't notice anything except it pulls up vertical climbs way better now and seems a tad faster too! It also steers a little better as well. i would do this mod to ANY crawler!

I am running underdrives in the rear and talk about instant climb advantage! The main advantage I see with it is the fact that the front tires PULL the car up the rocks. Some guys go as extreme as Underdrive in the rear and Overdrive in the front. That is all well and cool except for when you go to back up since the car tends to "bunch up" on you. Then again we never reverse do we :ror:
