Panther Cougars

Well, I couldn't get these tyres (tires) here in Australia, so I posted up about 5 pages back for some help. dkingston and a few others suggested I contact Panther directly. So I did.

Not only did they come to the party by supplying me with a set of rubber, they also covered the shipping for free :)

If the tyre is as good as their customer service, I'll be as happy as a pig in %$# :)

I will post up when I get the rubber on my crawler.

Same here in the UK, and sent Priority Mail, Customer Service at it's best "thumbsup"
 
Noob_superman isn't the only one who doesn't like these tires either. Now I haven't run them yet, but just putting them on my rc4wd true scales, I"m not happy with them.
 
I don't understand why everyone's having a problem mounting them. I've mount two sets of two different beadlocks and both went butter smooth!
 
I have to put in my 2 cents. I mounted them up on some MSD delrin beadlocks. They mounted as easy or easier than any of the other tires I have tried lately, and I have sure been trying alot of new 2.2 rubber. I used the stock panther memory foam and 4oz front and 2 oz rear additional lead weight. I have a set of losi claws and a set of badlands all mounted on the same type of MSD beadlocks. The cougars are a little bit taller unmounted but when mounted on the rig all of the tires are basically the same height due to the "static loaded radius". This is because of the soft, thin rubber construction and very soft memory foams.

They perform GREAT! Actually, there isn't a looser in the bunch, but I would have to say they offer slightly better grip. There doesn't seem to be any break in necessary. They are ready to go out of the box. I think the bar has been raised a little higher with this tire.

One thing I noticed was that they can get wadded up pretty bad. I got a rear tire caught in a hole and should have backed out....but gassed it instead:twisted:. The wheel turned, the tire grabbed, then all of a sudden it wadded up looking something like making salt water taffy for about 2 seconds before popping out of the hole and resuming it's former shape. BTW, the bead didn't pop out and no damage to the tire at all. I have never experienced anything like that and am truly impressed with their durability. "thumbsup"all the way!!!
 
I noticed that as well. They will get you in bad situations because they dont just spin when bound, they grip.

I have NEVER broken a front driveshaft using dig, but this weekend I used dig and the female shaft exploded into 3 pieces becuase the tires were getting sick traction...

Crazy traction man, they are nuts.

And sidhilling, it doesent matter that the tire folds over, becuase the side tread hold the line, so who cares if they fold. The thing doesent slide, and thats all that matters.

I LOVE my losis but they cant sidehill without sliding..
 
why? well because on one of the tires I got the bead is probably more than a 1/4 inch too big. I can take the wheel and slide it through the tire without touching it. But its only one side of the tire. And there seems to be alot of flashing left on the tires, spent a good half hour trimming the excess rubber off the beads.

a half hour?? there is a lot of flashing left on these tire, more than any other tire i have bought, but if you just grab it it pulls right off. no cutting needed. its like the extra that was originally cut off from he mold just stuck back on because of the tires stickiness. took me all of 5 min to pull all flashing off of all 4 tires. way easier than any other tire.

the tires do seem too big for my sinners as well, but its because of the softness of the tire and how thin they are, they mounted up no problem, actually easier than any other tire, but that could have just been the beadlock rims i am using as they were the first tire i mounted to the new wheels.

get them mounted run them and then tell us they aren't any good! "thumbsup"
 
I ordered straight from Panther back on May 16. They offered to ship them to me here in Canada free of charge as well. I received them in about two weeks - which is quite fast for shipping from California to Newfoundland.

I'm happy with both the customer service from Panther and the tires"thumbsup"

So how is everyone running the Panthers?
Full foam front AND rear or no foam front?
How big / many air holes are you using and in the tire or wheel?

You for sure want to run foam. The tire would go straight to the wheel without it. Actually IMHO you need to run a really stiff foam all the way around. I really like the NWTT hybrid reach foams. I run the soft up front and the stiff in the rear.

I don't know what to tell you about one side being larger than the other. If you could please take a picture and send it to sales@panther-rc.com I am sure they would appreciate it and make it worth your while...

As for the flashing...

This is an issue that is compound specific. There has always been issues with more flashing on specific compounds. This is a by-product of the force (or lack of) applied to the mold halves during injection.

The "quick" cure for this is extremely expensive, putting significantly larger hydraulic cylinders in place. It would take exponentially larger cylinders than currently in use and would be fairly expensive considering the number of machines that would need done.

Please understand, this isn't as much of an issue with some companies strictly due to the compound of rubber. Panthers molding machines are state-of-the-art. When changing the compounds, the flashing diminishes. So with the weighing of resolutions: changing compound, spending huge $$$ or have some flashing, trust me the flashing is the best answer, for now.

As these machines age there will be upgrades that will alleviate this problem.

Panther tires always have the ghost flash, I've said it many times. It's in the half way where the 2 molds join and on the bead. However the flash is very minimal and can be groomed using only your hands.

I've bought some Pro-Lines and Losis which needed major surgery to remove flashing from.
