Pinion and Spur selection

One of the things i still need for my tow rig is the proper spur and pinion selection. I'm running stock locked scx10 axles with a 45 turn team integy motor. My transmission is an aluminum case, metal gear scx10 transmission with an aluminum 88t gear pre installed. I don't need crazy speed for this rig so i don't know if the current gear is good or bad. The rig will be towing a 2 place 5th wheel trailer and will also be used for plowing. I'm running it on 1.9 ripsaws for right now. Can anyone help me choose or show me a chart or something to figure out the proper gearing? I did find the gear ratio chart in the noobie listings, but it didn't help me. I guess i'm really just looking for people's suggestions from what they've driven with already and what would work best?

It's gonna depend on what gear ratio you are looking for and what ratio is recommended for your motor.

Example: suggested ratio for my Holmes Hobbies 35T is 5.5:1.

To figure out which pinion I need I divide my spur tooth count which is 87 by 5.5 which is the ratio I am seeking.

87 divided by 5.5 equals 15.818. So I can run a 16T pinion and be close enough to a 5.5:1 ratio.

It works the other way as well. Say you have an 88T spur with a 14T pinion. Divide 88 by 14 and you get a ratio of 6.285:1

My guess would be that 5.5:1 is generally a good ratio across the board. Another general rule is volt up, gear down. The key is to keep motor temps low.
