Any thoughts on this? might be good because of all the available ratios.

The planetary gear box system is a highly versatile system for reduction of high RPM electric motors for high-torque low RPM applications.

This type of gear reduction system is often used in precision instruments because of the reliability and accuracy of the unit. The adaptation of these units is limited only by your imagination. By adding/removing gears in assembly, you can select ratios of 16:1, 20:1, 25:1, 80:1, 100:1 and 400:1.

Operates at 4.5V DC. 15100 RPM.

Heres what it looks like sitting in front of a 1:6 scale Humvee body.....one of these days I'll finish that project...

Sure looks alot like a planetary unit inside the Nylint axles. Outside covers are a different color though...

In the current issue of Robot magazine, they put a Mamba in one. Apparently it works, but after a while it ended up fusing one of the carriers to the case. It was an easy fix - that reduction stage was replaced, and a little extra lube was added. But, I don't think the testing was done with any sort of load on the output. So, I would be curious to see just what kind of performance thia gearbox would have in an actual rig. It would probably be great for somehting like a VMG, maybe a TLT. But I wouldn't put it in anything bigger.

It was hard to tell a size in the original pic. I think the output shaft is a little small for any real motor at 400:1, hell, even 100:1. Snap crackle pop.

This is a hobby grade gear box/motor combo. The gears are plastic and can be easily stripped. I suppose if you replace the gears with metal gears, they would make a very decent winch.

the reduction is in the unit itself so lower gearing would put strain on everything besides the reducer at 400 to 1 it would wear less then at say 50 to 1 (under the same engine rpm)

i believe its the same. they looked identical to me, but my nylint is still running so i have no reason to try and fit it in.
