Hey guys, need some help, recently had a body painted but couldn't take out the rear window so I just masked it off...well then I got it back, the window is all F'd up now :x its like the glue from the tape actually ate the window in some spots and fogged /started to eating the plastic in other spots:-( Anyone have any suggestions for fixing this or at least making it look better? I was thinking of tinting from the inside, then wet sanding the outside, and clearing it then? I think if its tinted it wont really be as noticeable and the car I am modeling it after had limo tint on the rear hatch and you couldn't see anything through it.

Thanks in advance
Mike

Long time ago a guy I worked with bought a polish used for airplane windshields. We used it on plexiglass seamed to work well. Don't remember where he got it, but I think he went to the local airport and asked about it.

Brasso might work too (any metal polish work on plastic, you just have to be carefull for the speed of the polishing pad.) I used some local made metal polish on lexan windshield (Tokyo something brand), result was really good, not optically perfect because I used a fabric disk on a dremel instead of a flat polishing pad, but really good anyway.

MOST IMPORTANT PART... BE SLOW AND PATIENT... it's not a 1 minute remedial... be ready to have the tool set to such a low speed (best is between 200 and 500 rpm) that nothing seems to improve for the first 20 minutes...

as others have stated there are polishes for clear plastic's and glass. major pain's if you are gonna limo tint it any way you should be able to paint from inside wet sand real fine and then clear with a water base paint. or you could remove the glass and use lexan to replace.

i have used miquiers swirl remover.. works good on old headlights too...

and what type of tape did you use so none of us use it?

Novus Plastic polishers

I have use them on my old miata back plastic window, headlights and various other plastics.

Dude it was just regular masking tape...I dunno wtf happened, but where it left glue behind from when I pulled it off, thats where it actually ate the window :x:roll: fawkin sucks, cant exactly get another one of these very easily

Do you know where that stuff is sold?

Screw all that, make a nice set of old school wrap around louvers for the back window. That would look killer!

Thought about it, but I dont know where to even big... the car I am modeling it after did have the louvers for a short time too...

I have automotive detailing experience and we use 3M plastic cleaner and polish. It is two different bottles. Use the cleaner first. Then use the polish. In my years of restoring muscle cars, it will make 40 year old plastic shine like new. I am not a fan of Meguiars, Mother's or other cheaper products. 3M is generally industry grade and you may have to go to a auto body supply store. Good luck.

Mike,
Mequires Plastic Polish will fix that no problem. It comes in a white squeeze bottle. Use a soft cloth and go in circular motions until it is clear. Then go back and forth to get the swirls out.

Nothing better.

Thank you guys!!!

we used 3m perfect it ,to repair scratches/haze on corvette instrument panels/led clusters , in the dealership .
but first try tooth paste ,not the gel ,works really well on plastic !
.

also creations unlimited makes flex-i-files,they have one which has 3 different grits thats called #3210 polisher/finisher .sort of a 3 stage buffing stick .can find @ lhs .

If you have a Harley-Davidson dealer close, they carry the three step polish. It does work great!!! We use it on the windshields of the bikes and you would never know there was a sctrach there.
