In my head
I was trying to change the oil in some Associated shocks today but I think I 'm doing it wrong. On my maxx shocks I would fill the shock with oil then push the shaft up, put the bladder/diaphram thing on while pulling the shaft down then put the cap on. But with the Associated shocks I can't seem to put the cap on once the diaphram is aready on the shock I have to put the diaphram inside the cap first.

But the shocks don't seem right doing it this way. Some seem to have air in them and other seemed over filled with oil, meaning you couldn't push the shaft in all the way like it was building up too much pressure. On most of them the shaft would extend back out, by its self after you push it in. IMO it shouldn't do that.

I know this is probably a noobie question, but can someone tell me the proper way to fill shocks. BTW I searched first!

my associated shocks don't have a bladder.they are from a T4.
here is how i do it.

1. Fill the shock body with oil. Purge any air by sliding the shaft up and down. finish with the shaft all the way down.
2. Fill the body to the top. Fill the cap with oil. Put the cap on body of shock. tighten cap
3. Try pushing shaft up, If it won't go all the way. Loosen cap( do not remove completely} now push shaft up and any excess oil will leak out of the loose cap. retighten cap.

repeat step 3 untill you can push shaft all the way up. it should rebound about a 1/4 inch or so.

and you are ready to go. hope this helps

Also, I remember having the shock oil "bulge" up over-top of the body just a bit, like the foam head on a beer, when putting the top on... Also held the shock in a rag as to catch the spillage from doing step 3 as mentiond above... I had an AE RC10 gold tub buggy as my first racer and an RC10GT after that and that method gave my flawlessly working shocks every race I entered...

I'm pretty sure they are Associated shocks, but not 100% sure.

RXcrawler do you have a photo of your shocks?

The shocks in the link provided by prototype are not associated

Here is a pic, the springs have a slightly smalled diameter that maxx shocks.

They're old duratrax shocks, I've got some on my older rc's. If I remember right, you would just fill them almost all the way, get the air out, fill them the rest of the way, and have a rag around them to soak up the extra oil when you tighten the cap. It's been awhile since I've worked on them, but I think that sounds right.
