Questions about MAPP Gas

it's the same as acetylene but its cheaper and dosent burn quite as hot, we switched to it last year at my shop and you really can't tell a differance in most things. The only thing I really noticed was on our cnc burning machine with acetylene I could cut 16 inch plate easy but when we went with mapp 12 inch was about tops. You do need to use a mapp torch tip but the welding tips will work the same they will just be harder to start. now we use propolyne and it sucks.

mapp gas

mapp gas is totally safe as long as you aren't stupid with it it is like any other compressed gas if you drop it and puncture it you can hurt yourself but if you are smart with it and follow basically the same safety procidures as oxy acetylene you will be just fine.

i know in shop we were thought to sodder(plumbing), if one can do that does brazing take the same basic skills

Its not quite as easy, but the idea is the same. Remember braizing rod melts at a much higher temp so you may need to preheat the rod a little before heating your joint. Second, if you use galvanized(sp?) brake line SAND IT GOOD FIRST, nothing can ruin a good day like metal fever.

Hello Josh,

I'm sorry but after being a fab shop foreman for about 30 years I'm going to have to disagree with a few people here. While Mapp gas is significantly safer than Acetylene you can hardly dismiss it as being safe unless it is handled properly by a person with some knowledge of the gas and respected in the fact that it can kill you under the correct circumstances. This certainly isn't a huge disclosure since many things we do every day can be deadly such as driving/riding in a car or even taking a shower. What this does mean is that you should spend a little time searching a few links about the proper use and handling of Mapp gas before you rush out to buy some. I'm going to leave you a link here to the M.S. D. S. (material safety data sheet) for Mapp gas and highly recommend you read it. With that said Mapp gas is a wonderful product but safety should be your number one concern.

is it possible to use a soddering gun and stuff to make a tuber if your not gunna beat the hell out of it?

No, I dont think solder will hold strong enough to be useful. Go to a local welding supply and get some braizing rod, get some metal coat hangers and practice. Its taken a few weeks but I can finally get a joint that looks great and is strong.

Tried the soldering thing when I first started. IT SUCKS AS5..

Get the bernz-o-matic from lowes, homedepot or where ever sold around $40.
I carry the harris safty silv 45 and 56 if you want to order from me or you can sometimes find it on ebay. Don't forget your flux.
