re-source old charger?

I have an old charger, like for the old Ni-Cad type batteries with the Tyima plug/connector- you remember with the dial and volt meter on front? Anyway since I no longer have them type batteries- can that charger be adapted to any other type use? Or is it just more electronic junk? Thanks- Vic in SoCal

My buddy used one of those for a while to force feed a bad Lipo. Actually worked but I'm sure had some safety issues.

Depending on the wattage, you could turn it into a DC power supply.

I wouldnt plan on turning it into anything all that usefull. You could scavenge the wires.

It would be Ok to revive lipos that are at a low voltage that a lipo charger won't charge, but you would want to keep a close eye on it and only take it to the minimum voltage needed for it to charge on a dedicated lipo charger. I use an old traxxas wall charger to revive lipos that are below voltage but I keep a close eye on them and only bring up to the minimum needed to properly charge them.

Most of the modern lipo chargers can also charge Nicads, NiMH as well as lead acid. So your old Nicad charger is pretty much a duplicate. Taking all the precautions mentioned above about bringing a below voltage lipo back to life, your current charge should be able to do that in Nicad/NiMH mode.

It's probably electronic junk, other than as a power supply as someone mentioned, probably not a high power one though (like you can't use it to power a DC lipo charger).

Hey, at least I'm stimulating the economy as then I'll have to go and buy stuff that I could have salvaged from the things that I just threw away!

It's my rationale when insisting to my wife "Don't throw that away! I can use that for project # 546!"... slowly pushing me closer to full-fledged hoarder. Fortunately, as long as I keep my pieces & parts confined to my hobby room and the garage, she's content.
