Canada, eh.
I've been looking for a little while at getting a go-fast cheaper (relative to scalers!) basher. Something my son and I could bash, but I wouldn't feel bad if it sat on the shelf for a month at a time because of how much money I had invested in it. Figured something a bit smaller so it's easy to throw in with the suitcases/camping gear when travelling in the summer.

Currently I've been looking mostly at the 1/16 revo platform based minis and the 1/18 mini-t based minis. Prefer a rtr/artr, 2.4Ghz would be nice. Waterproof is always a bonus, but I've waterproofed lots of electronics before myself. Nothing too "exotic" so that replacement parts are easy to get from the lhs.

Thoughts and suggestions?

I love my Mini E-Revo, it has the VXL in it so it's wicked fast on 2 cell even. But it's tough as nails and makes me giggle profusely!

Mini 8ight would be my suggestion.

I bought one and have only replaced the shock rod ends. When it bottoms out on high jumps they are the first to go. There are a couple other tricks to make it a little better. 3S is fun.

The main reason I would recommend it is for it's handling. It's super stable at all speeds. I was just driving it last night. It's a fun R/C to drive. Plus like you said, I can take it anywhere, due to it's size.

I would suggest the Losi 1:24 rally car. just slap on a 7.4V lipo and you have extra speed. plus the rally car can be upgraded and you can teach your son to upgrade if need be. the car is $109 by itself. downside to the rally is it costs more to upgrade the car with the electronics than it is actually worth.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, seems like I'm in the right area for rigs to consider. While the mini 8ight is a nice buggy, I've always thought of the buggies as being more of a race vehicle rather than basher. Maybe that's not the case here?

I would recommend the HPI Savage XS you can find them for good prices used and they are extremely tough and fast! I've tried the Mini Summit which is the same platform as the Mini Revo and the Savage XS is way Tougher. I've taken mine off of huge jumps and landed it so many ways that would just break on the Mini Revo but I haven't broken anything yet. And It's Waterproof :)

if your looking for REALLY cheap them you could go Electrix RC 1/18 Smash. mini E-Revo would be my best bet though. i even want one. but i might cough up the $100 to get a ECX smash just to see how crappy they are.

I would typically agree but I find myself bashing the mini 8ight as much as anything. Most parts are 1/10 size and aluminum so it's tough.

Don't make us happy get whatever you like best."thumbsup"

I love my mini erevo, I beat the hell out of it and it just keeps going!
I've been thinking of picking up a Savage xs though

another one hear speaking up for the Traxxas 1/16 cars :D ANY of them are pure fun, weather you get the Slash, E-Revo, or Summit

I started with a used mini Summit (bought off this forum actually)

then my buddy got a used mini E-Revo off craigslist and I completely rebuilt it for him

then my Summit got a body drop and some knobbies, and I ended up gearing it too high  was a BLAST while it lasted; RIDICULOUSLY fast on a 2s lipo

ended up burning up the stock motor and the Sidewinder that was in it, so I bought ANOTHER sidewinder and a cheap $25 1/10th scale motor, a big block motor mount, and a BUNCH of other goodies including an E-Revo body and everything else to convert it to an E-Revo, and completely revamped the car

it's a BEAST now!

absolute BLAST of a car, and takes one HELL of a beating too! throw some RPM arms on it, shim the differentials (search the Traxxas forum; there's a good how-to on doing it), and these cars are guaranteed to please

Thanks again for the input everyone. I'm pretty sure I'll be going with one of the mini Traxxas platforms. My son loves the fact that they're bringing out the licensed monster truck bodies, so that, combined with their durability sold me on it. Figure I can hopefuly get one of the mini revo or summit used and buy the body separately.

Time to hit the classifieds :D!
