Religulous ~

Go die.:DGet over it.
I dont believe in your God or Jesus Christ, thats my choise and telling someone who doesnt that they should go die is totally ****ed up. I hope you are right and your God passes judgment on you for being a total cock.

Now....

If there is a High and mighty God, that created everything. Then why is it that we are a speck of sand in that vast darkness. It says in the bible that he created the earth, but does not mention the creation of anything else in all that darkness. What would be the purpose of creating a speck, that is the earth and not creating anything else or mentioning the creation of anything else? Thats alot like taking a 200 page notebook and writing one word in it on the first page and throwing it away coz you think its used up. There are alot of things to explain and everyday something new that has never been explained is being discovered because of science.

So, God created the world in 7 days, on the 6th day he created man, the 7th he rested. But Dinosaurs have been proven to walk the earth billions of years ago, where man, only 100's of thousands of years ago. The bible does not talk about dinosaurs or the creation of them, so did they ever exist? According to the written word in the bible, no. If man and dinosaur were both created in a 6 day stretch and both proven to exist billions of years apart in time, God had one hell of a work week and time never existed to him in the way it does to us. Curious.......

The bible is man written, stories carried on from person to person, generation to generation. Dinosaurs were never mentioned because 2000 years ago, the bones were never discovered, so why mention something that was never known to exist. We all know how stories go, just like rumors, they get stretched and added to as time goes on to make them more interesting to listen to. So you get the far fetched stories in the bible were created. i.e. Noahs Ark, yeah, thats a good fairy tale there. Man wrote the book, man created the stories. There might and I say MIGHT very lightly, be some small amount of truth to each of the stories.

I believe strongly in science and the scientific approach to things. Ive never seen the boogy man, but none of you have ever seen God or Jesus either, so Boogity Woogity must exist somewhere.

Do you believe in God because you were taught to or because it was a conclusion you came to yourself?
I believe in God by my choice :)
Do you not believe by yours?

I never said I didn't believe. I just don't have the popular preconcieved notion of God.

It says we were made in his image. not a fish or a monkey "thumbsup"

1. You are relying on mortal man's word. History has taught us that that is not always a good thing.
2. That implies that there is something somewhere floating around that could potentially look exaclty like Danny DeVito who controls the universe. Scary. ;)

I believe in God, I feel no obligation to justify my faith.

If you want to believe in a little fat man, a rubber chicken or that your ancestors were a monkeys, that's cool. I support your right to believe or not believe as you choose.

As it should be. We all believe differently, even within the same faith.

The problem is that people believe that God and religion are the same thing. God is God, religion is the worship (whichever way it happens to twist) of that God. You can have one without the other. Its all about interpretation.

The Bible is full of holes. It simply can't be trusted by either todays standard or by those of when it was written. At best its nothing more than a book of inpirational (to some) and sometimes confusing (to anyone who will stop to think about it) stories.

God is all powerfull, yet he needed to rest.
God is all knowing, yet we must pray for him to hear us.
God is everywhere, yet we need to ask for him to be where we are.

Seriously duuuude, let it go. Do you really think you're going to convince anyone? Evangelizing only works on addicts.

Like Robb said in the beginning. This stuff does'nt work on the internet.
I think the thread has run its course.

Go die.:DGet over it.
Get over what? You are the one with belief issues man. I have nothing to get over, I have my shit all figured out and am not a cog in the machine, unlike you who is too programmed to think for yourself. See you in hell brother, save me a seat or I will save one for you. :ror:

Do you believe "religious wars" are the result of religion because you were taught that, or is it a conclusion you came to via independent research? Seriously, do you think Slobodan Milosevic gave a shit about religion? He was a fawking terrorist! A greedy, power mad psycho who claimed religious context because it gained the favor of the people, and he slaughtered muslims because it was an easy way to scare people into not questioning him. Just like 90 percent of the other leaders in the cases of religious wars. Yes, there are some true believers. I get the impression that Ahmadinejad is a true believer, and that's why he scares me. But I'm 100% confident the true believers are in the minority.
Lastly, what the people of a country engaged in this kind of thing think is irrelevant. They rarely have a say.

I would have to honestly say that very few of todays wars are begun purely for religious beliefs, other than some of those in the middle east that have been going on since those beliefs were founded. Even then, the power players that are involved, as you said, are terrorists. Nothing more. They use a claimed religion to gain support from those that would not otherwise be doing what they are doing. So while the intent (terrorism) may not be religious, the power and ability is drawn from it. I would think that technically that makes it a religious conflict.

And yes, there are the aggressors and the defenders. Those that are forcebly engaged to defend themselves cannot be held at fault.

Seriously duuuude, let it go. Do you really think you're going to convince anyone? Evangelizing only works on addicts.

I'm not here to convince anyone. I'm posting my own views, and if someone happens to drastically change thier life because of them, so be it. I'll be passing the collection plate around later tonight. "thumbsup"

If you look at my post you will see that I am in fact agreeing with you Duuuuude-I said I have no problems with people believing in a personal God, my problems are with the orginization that says they are right and everyone else is wrong etc. etc. Choose what you choose to believe, but let everyone else do the same.

I didn't meant to imply that you weren't agreeing with me. A personal God is really all we need if we have the capability of finding one. Some feel they need assistance and guidance (religion), others don't. Some don't care about it at all.

I don't know anything for sure myself. But I do have the opportunity to try to figure it out.

If everyone would read a little you could find out the religion and Jesus figures have been around a lot longer than you think. Governments need to keep people believing that their is some reward for being good, going to work, paying your taxes, and not killing one another unless it is in the name of God or religion which by the way has been the reason for many a war. Difference of religious beliefs. I hate wars!!!

this

It's about good and evil, in your heart and mind. Some are good on the inside and some are evil. Your choice ,nobody elses. Only you know, so what are you going to be when you make your choice. Good or Evil.

The problem with how this discussion has gone and how many go and why its taboo to agrue about religion at say work is simple: most people (both sides) have no true knowledge of the other, nor the ambition to question what they've been taught.

I'm atheist which really makes me anti-religion. I believe in science holding the answers I need to the problems of the world. I have read both the Old and New testaments, the Koran, and studied religion at a college level with a professor who should have been called a priest. He never liked when I asked him questions, and usually walked away from an answer. I've only ever met 1 other person I respect on this topic, a great guy who is very staunchly christian, but non-demoninational and has studied hard enough to have facts from both sides.

Good luck with this topic...its bound to go awry soon.

I do want to see the movie, got a few more for people to see if they'd like to explore the possiblity against religions if you'd want. Remember though all these movies prevent facts in their best light...editing is a bitch to equality. I'd recommend after seeing any docu-movie to explore the facts presented, don't just take them as fact.

In the end, just be happy in what you believe and let everyone be.

For what it's worth...

There was a show on Discovery (or History channel, or Science Channel - can't remember) recently about ancient civilizations.

It showed how things were done to help "persuade" people to believe in religion (and in doing so, fall into a common belief system and ideology).

The Parthenon was set up so that clergy above the main prayer area could create the sound of thunder by rolling wooden barrels. The echoing sound was supposedly coming from Thor, the Greek God of Thunder.

The show had several other ancient religion based mechanisms.

A coin operated Holy Water dispenser, statue that would cry "tears of blood" by boiling water elsewhere in the church, etc.

Thats why its good to talk about it. Besides, there is no better way to test your faith in something than to question it.

I too am trying to expand my knowledge in this territory. Living where I do makes in somewhat of a challenge (Praise Jesus or go to hell!), so most of my research is clandestine. I've got the web, the library, and a couple born-again freinds that I need to feel out a bit more before I ask them to have a proper discussion with me.

While I feel no compelling pull to sign up to organized religion, it is something that has always interested me. Still, I have my own thoughts and beliefs which get restructured quite a bit from time to time.

Absolutely. Make no mistake, this movie is about nothing more than punching holes in religious theory. The Christians, Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Scientologists, and the guy that believes we have space lizard overlords all take a hit here.

It does stay to basic topics though. I don't remember any parts that caused me to whip out the bible and say "really? where?".

Any documentary will be slanted towards the view of the creator. You would be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn't check the facts.

In the end, just be happy in what you believe and let everyone be.

X2- Good words for either side of the fence.....

Booya! "thumbsup"

Duuuuuude, the problem with debates in forms like the internet and why these debates fail is we all act big online. I don't know you, you don't know me theory. So debating online fails everytime that I've attempted.

Zietgeist is good to see...there's others. Though I've seen a few very compelling Intelligent Design movies. Want to wrap your head around something read books by Sam Harris very good author at getting some sensitive ideas across in a still light manner. Or dive deep into the pain of comprehension with Richard Dawkins.

What if us atheists are wrong?
