Renting a moving truck ?

Anyone moved lately and tried to find the best deal on a rental truck ? I need a one way from Iowa to Texas.
I have searched U-Haul,Budget and Penskie is there anymore ?

BTW: What the heck is the deal with Ryder rentals requiring that you do a round trip ? Why the heck would I want to rent a truck and then have to bring it back to where I rented it from ? STUPID !

I have always used penske. I use to lease one of there big rigs!
There moving truck prices alway ended up being cheaper.

Edit: Take out the max insurance you can on it, then thrash it.

We've rented several U-hauls over the years. We found the trick to getting a nice truck is to have my wife be the one to rent it (she has a regular driver's license). Every time I've rented the truck, they stick me with the nastiest POS stick-shifted death-trap on their lot. They will deny it, but I think it's because I have a CDL, so they figure I can handle driving an "older" truck.

Last 26' U-haul I rented was a baby-Brig GMC chassis with a 5-speed stick that was so thrashed I had to hold the shifter to keep it in the top 3 gears while on the gas. When I mentioned it to the guy a the U-haul shop, he laughed and said "aww you can handle it, you're a trucker!". (I had never mentioned what I did for a living to the guy or who I worked for).

i work for a moving company.

id suggest like "portable storage options" i.e. PODS and similar companies.

and when it comes to renting a truck, the farther from your move day that you rent, the cheaper it will be

How does "pods" work ? Is it way more expensive ?

With PODS, they drop it off (in your driveway), you pack it when you want, then tell them when to take it away. A week or so later (depending on how far you are moving), they drop it off at your house. When you are finished unpacking, they come get it.

its completely relative to the company, your shit, the distance, etc.

but, basically they drop off a few containers at your place, you load it, or pay someone like me to load it, then they pick it up when you are ready, and deliver it to your new place. and you unload, or have it unloaded there.


its all specifically unique to your situation. sometimes its cheaper to have 1 company load haul and unload, othertimes, renting a uhal save you big bucks.

Well, since you are planning to move to Texas, then yes, that is what I am saying. If you change your plans and decide to move somewhere else, then, by all means, pack your underwear as well!
