RGT Rock Cruiser burning up 370 motors

Hello all, I'm new here. I haven't been involved in RC hobbies in over 15 years. Now that my son is old enough to be interested, here I am again and soooo much has changed.
I purchased my son an RGT RC-4 Rock Cruiser for Christmas. It has a small 370 motor and long story to short, The motor burned out fairly quickly. when I took the transfer case out it was binding and not spinning smoothly. I oiled all bearings and added a small amount of Dow33 to the gears. Once I put it back together, it all spun smooth and I figured that was the cause.
I purchased an inexpensive replacement Traxxas 7575X 28 turn motor. It burned out on the very first run. It was hot when it went. there was no drive train drag this time, so I thought maybe I went too cheap with the replacement motor.
I then purchased a Speed Secret 22turn motor and heat sink. I thought maybe the larger gauge of wire in the 22 turn motor would be a little more hardy and figured the heat sink can only help.
He had one good run with it, out in the yard, running over rocks through grass and a water hole he loves to play in. He ran it until the battery was flat. The next day while I was at work, he ran it in the house and burned up the third motor. Not being there hands on, I'm not sure of the temperature, or anything for that matter.
I'm at a loss as to what to do now, I don't want to keep throwing motors at this thing, as it was supposed to be an entry level crawler for my son to beat around with.
The whole drivetrain spins without any binding, so I don't see any real resistance there. One thing I have noticed is it seems to have a "brake". When the truck is at speed and the throttle is chopped, the rear tires will bounce off the ground it stops so hard. My son tends to go Forward/Reverse instantly and I wonder if that has anything to do with it? I just don't know, so I am here humbly asking for advice and insight.

If you bind the tirez up at all it will kill the motor i have a max stone 16 same drive train and mine runs very hot every run im just carefull with it i dont trust the drive train to hold up to more power so i just live with it maybe run a smaller battery so you have to take a break more often i have thought about doing a motor forward mod and going to a 380 motor but again i dont trust the rest of the drive train i would say get a new rig with a 1/10 scale drive train

I would recommend a couple of things in addition to using a smaller pinion gear:

1) If possible, turn off the drag brake (by setting the ESC to f/b/r) since the rig is being used as a basher rather than a crawler, and
2) Teach your son not to go from full forward to reverse or vice-versa without letting the rig come to a complete stop first, especially on high-traction surfaces.
