RS10 ESC Calibration?

A friend just gave me his RS10 as its been collecting dust since he picked up a Honcho and Wraith in the past few weeks.

It hasn't had much use since it came out of the box running with about 1/3 the speed and power going forward compared to reverse. He contacted redcat both in the us and canada and didn't get a solution to the problem.

He did try to adjust the throttle end points but it didn't change anything. I thought something may be wired backwards since my CC Mini Sidewinder has a default reverse with less power than forward.

I thought maybe something was wired backwards but the description for the RC RS10 ESC below off redcat's site shows the same output for both directions:

ESC (for crawler use only) Used with all Rockslide models i;ncluding RS10 and Super Crawler Data Items Normal Minimum Maximum Peak Input Voltage 7.2V 6.0V 8.4V 9.6V Output Current (Forward) 50A 100A/5S Output Current (Reverse) 50A 100A/5S Output Voltage at + 5v 5.0A 10A/5S

Has anyone else had this problem or have some ideas to try to fix this problem? I haven't seen any info on how to calibrate the forward throttle for the esc.

I have contacted Redcat but haven't heard anything back yet.

I'm not opposed to putting a new better esc that can run bigger motors and batteries but I'd like to try and fix the stock one first.

I did do a search about this issue but didn't find anything specific to the RS10 esc and I don't have enough back ground knowledge to understand as much of the info as I probably need to in many of the discussions.

Thanks for any and all help.

The only thing I can suggest is pressing the little reset button on the side of the ESC before powering it. hold it down as it powers then let off. Then power down after it does its thing and repower and see if anything changed.

for grins, try reversing the motor wires on both motors and see if they are slow in the same direction
as before or if they are now slower in the other direction.

by any chance is there a low voltage cut-off installed? if he used a lipo battery and installed the cut-off
maybe it senses a low voltage in whatever battery you have.

just a couple of things to check

pictures can sometimes help in finding out the problems

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The esc doesn't appear to have any buttons on it, disconnecting 1 motor at a time and reversing the wires had no effect.

Redcat did get back to me and requested a picture that I will send today to see if it can be re-calibrated for future reference. I am happy to report with the help of the on-line manual on redcat's site I was able to re-set the throttle and the truck is now working properly.

My friend had already put a better metal gear servo in front with an alloy horn and I re-set that too so now I'm good to go. I have some nice bodies for it I found on toys at my local thrift store so look for the pics in the gallery soon.
