**SCX-10 Gear noise...PLEASE HELP!**

Hey everyone,
Been awhile since I've been on here but anyway...so, I built a Honcho kit back in 2010 and from day one my truck has had a sloppy noise coming from the pinion/spur gear area....at first I thought it was the motor but I have removed the pinion gear and run the motor by itself and its really quiet, so then my next step: I disconnected the driveshafts from the differentials and it was still pretty quiet so I know it's not the transmission, so now I was unsure...but maybe it was the internals of the axle/gears inside the pumpkin...I decided to tear apart the axles anyway just to clean them and they did have quite a bit of gritty junk in them so I cleaned them and threw some fresh grease on all the metal parts, put it all back together and still had a sloppy sound but upon closer inspection...I discovered that the sound was coming from the the spur/pinion gear area....so...I tried to change the gear mesh between the spur and pinion gears in every possible position from super tight to super loose mesh and it still makes a crappy noise (it was definitely more loud/sloppy sounding the looser the gear mesh)....so my next idea was "maybe if I switch to a different pitch gear set-up..." anybody have any ides? Or am I just too damn picky about my truck sounding nice and not like a piece of junk!? LOL! I have heard Honchos that are very quiet...almost silent and thats what I want mine to sound like! Anyway, thank you very much for reading my thread and any help will be much appreciated!

I bought mine used and it had a badly worn pinion gear- the sound was awful, especially in reverse. Got a steel pinion and things improved greatly!

Are you running 32pitch or 48
48 would be quieter of course....metal gears ??

If you've checked your mesh, chances are you are a bit too picky...just saying.
I run with a guy that runs 48 pitch gears....he's so quiet....yes, it's nice but quite frankly doesn't bother me. I run 32 pitch for the contact area and putting power to the ground...noisy or not.

It's a truck

im running the stock metal pinion and the stock plastic spur gear, 48 pitch

48 pitch huh....
Well, there's going to be some noise no matter what you run...do you have grease in the tranny??? Have you inspected those gears ?

Try changing the spur and pinion....just put new ones in

I actually have a similar problem, i bought mine new and assembled it as per booklet, at first I had to little grease in the diffs (after first run it became quite noisy so I redid them with lots of grease. Without the motor connected the chassis is dead quiet, as soon as i connect the motor it gets noisy and it doesn't matter how far or close the motor is to the spur gear.....I'm assuming its just motor noise

Look at a couple of things. First off is it the stock motor mount plate? Stock Transmission case?

I run steel 32 pitch pinion and Steel Spur. I have a Super Shafty Ultimate Motor Mount Plate and a Vanquish transmission box. Very Quite, nothing in the transmission flexes.
