SCX-10 Overhaul!

I'm running into a bit of money this January, and am going to be picking up all kinds of goodies for my SCX-10.

I'm going to keep everything but the ESC, Servo, Motor, and Tires. (FOR NOW.) This build will probably not be completely finished until June or sometime around there.

Servo: Twister High Performance Waterproof Servo

ESC: Outcry Crawler Speed Controller ESC with TurboBEC

Motor: HPI Firebolt 15T Brushed Motor (1) [HPI1146] | RC Cars & Trucks - A Main Hobbies

Tires: Pro-Line Interco TSL SX Super Swamper Tires 1166 for Rock Crawler

If you see any problem with the setup I have selected, e.g. Compatability issues, PLEASE, let me know!!!

This is my first overhaul/build, and it's going to be quite awesome when I'm done with her

I'd honestly worry that a 15t won't have enough torque for a SCX10.

edit: These are about the 2 toughest kids on the block as far as motors go... you can find the 14t's pretty cheap once in a while.
If you place a wanted ad, you'll get one.

Is that 1 extra turn really that important? I mean, is there some drastic performance change?

The Puller's are rated much different than the Firebolt.

In terms of Firebolt turns, I'd guess the 14t Puller is around a 65t... on 6s it's unstoppable.

In my limited experience, all high end HH motors are pretty solid, you can't go wrong as long as you get the turn your looking for.

The outcry is 2-3s capable with a 30-turn plus limit so those are good options. I run a Holmes 27-turn(with a different speed control) and have good luck with them. On 3s though, the brushes wear pretty fast.

Both of those look like they will perform well.

Now, back to the turn issue, in your expert opinion, what turn would be appropriate for my needs?

What esc do you have?
If you have a esc capable of going above 3s, I like the higher turn motors like a 45t or 55t on 4s lipo.

If not, I've seen great results from the 16t Crawlmaster on 3s.

You can ask in HH thread, describe what you want to do, what kind of truck you have: mods, weight... and he'll recommend something for ya. "thumbsup"

It says anything over 30+T will do, so a 35T (should) be right up it's alley. Or not?

Haha, I consider anyone that know's more than me on a specific subject an expert, and you seem to know what you're talking about.

Like I said, this is my first build, and I'm not very familiar with Electronics in RC's, I know the basics, but I would probably be in a world of hurt if someone gave me an unilimited budget and told me to build to best rig I can build. Compatibility issues for one. XD

Dang I'd like to see those two motors on 4s:ror: I run all my trucks on 3s and 35t motors, never had any luck with the 3 hh motors I used. Now I'm running tekin motors and have had very good luck with them. This same set up in my wraith with the super swappers gives me all the torque I need and good speed. I'm not saying hh motors are bad I'm just saying they didn't impress me.

I've run an HPI firebolt 15 turn in my SCX just cause it was cheap.

Even geared 12/87 on 2s it lacked the precise low speed control I was looking for. Had decent enough pep though. Bit faster than a brisk walk.

They do not last long when used in mud or water. Mine lasted less than an hour of submerged ussage before the brushes and comm were wasted.

If your running in mud and water than don't waste your money on hand wound custom wound motors. I've been sticking with the 35 turn sportmaster and they've served me well. Even after the comm is worn down I'll swap in another armature and new brushes and be ready to go again for half of another new motor.

IMO skip any electrical item made by RC3WD. You really want the Holmes BRXL with sportmaster combo. Not exactly cheap, but you get exactly what you pay for IMO.

You can get more servo for the buck if you do the waterproofing yourself. More torque is always better. I've been running a Savox 1268 in my SCX for the last year and really like it. Never stalls out, never loses it's line.

Mind you, I'm a cheap prick, so for me to spend big bucks on electronics really says something.

TCS has the BR-XL on sale... but I think it's the non-waterproof version.

I think the sportsmaster is an excellent motor for a scx10.
I see quite a few people pairing with sidewinders which you can find used about anywhere for $40.
It's a good combo that won't break the bank

I have run several motors in my scx10, and I think the best mix of torque and wheelspeed so far was the 550 sized 21t titan motor. that extra can size makes a big torque difference. For $20 each, it doesnt matter if they dont last forever.
