Sensored retrofit for unsensored brushless motor

I'm wondering if anyone has taken a sensor ring from something and stuffed it into a Castle can. I like the power from my 3800kv 4 pole motor, but it's not smooth at all. I'm wondering if there's a way to stick in a sensor board, or if I'm better selling it and just buying an equivalent sensored motor. It will be for Wraith and I'm not having much luck with keeping brushed motors in one piece in that truck.

The castle motor is a powerhouse, but if you want sensored power and Tekin Pro4 is where it is at. I believe it is possible to add a sensor to it, but the job would be beyond the skill of most people, and probably cost more than purchasing a new motor. Plus you could sell the old one a recoup some cash if it is unmolested.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, is it worth the molesting or just sell the Castle motor and pick up a Pro 4. It's definitely a beast, just wish they made that motor in a sensored style. Looking at used prices to sell that and they are all over the place. Might just list on eBay and see what I get and then put that towards the Tekin motor. I really want to stick with the larger 550 style brushless setup if I can.

If you go pro4, you will not need the larger can. That motor is a game changer, IMO. Holmes Hobby should have some crawler specific sensored motors available soon, or maybe they are out now, but until then the Pro4 is the end all be all of motors. I kept my 3800 just as a back up. I have in my box right now a Novak 550 4.5t, 5.5t, 6.5t, castle 3800, castle 5700, and a couple of tenshock motors. The Tenshock motors are pretty good, and priced well, but the cheapest ones are not sensored, so they are not much better than the 3800 in that area.

The sensored Tenshock would probably be the next choice, but they are only a few $ cheaper than the pro4, and it is a larger canned motor. I think they are 550 4 pole motors. At least my non sensored motors are bigger than even the 3800 by a little.

Thanks again, I've decided (based on this and another thread) that I'll stick with the brushed motor for now. Then build up the drivetrain, and ask my wife (and Santa) for a Pro 4 3300 for Xmas. You're right on keeping the 3800, good idea. I can always stick it in the truck for beach fun. The stock drivetrain should hold up to that power in sand since it's less traction.

There are a few other sensored 4 pole motors out there now to compete with the Pro4 and sensorless Castle.
There's the Trinity/Epic Revtech 4xs, which is probably the most expensive and is available in 3800 to 7200kv.
The Hobbywing Xerun 3656SD is a little bit longer than a 540, 56mm rather than the standard 50-53mm, but its less expensive and in a lower 3400 to 4700kv.
The Tenshock SC411 is even longer at 66.5mm, its probably the most powerful, around the same price as the Hobbywing and is available in 3500 to 5200kv.

However, I would have to agree that a sensored Castle would be pretty sweet. If somebody was making sensored endbells for the 36mm diameter (14xx series) motors, I'd probably buy 7 of them if they were around $20 a each.
