My cousin just got a Polaris Indy 400 for free. It's an older sled, but a cool little project. So, does anyone know anything about it, or a site that has any info. I'm completely new to the sled scene, so I don't know anything about them.
All we know right now is that the spark plugs need to be replaced, and we will probably put a new pipe on later. If you see anything that should be checked out, replaced, etc. please tell me. Thanks!

That what we've got. Fun to bum around on but not fast enough for me. It would be nice to know exactly what it is you want to know. I might be able to help.

I hope he got it free or something. I know polarises and the one pictured is worth less then 500 dollars in running condition. Some quick glances, Pipe is crushed and needs to be replaced. The damaged section of the pipe is part of the expansion chamber and it will greatly reduce preformance. The Track looks fishy. It looks like some Kevlar is showing on some spots due to delamination. Take a good look at the track. Pull a compression check and make sure both cylinders are within 15% of each other at the very least. Pull the carbs and have them cleaned along with replacing the jets etc. Check the rear suspension/skid frame to make sure all the bolts are tight and not missing. Check to make sure non of the holes in the aluminum skid frame are oblong. I would almost bet the clutches need to be completely rebuilt which may cost a couple hundred at a dealer or a competent shop. Check the chain case and drive shaft bearings.

Remove the tank and check the tunnel under neither the fuel tank for cracks.

Oh this machine has the small fuel tank on it so be aware of that before going out on it. Most newer models have 9.5 or larger fuel tanks while this one is around 7ish gallons.

Check oil pump and oilpump cable.

Oh and do not run it without an airbox.

There's spots that have little strings coming out. I have to clean it out so I can see everything. There's a crap load of leaves in the tracks.
Were just going to get it running and maybe run once or twice then sell it.

Not to try to start a big argument but the dent in the pipe will be fine, it is not a race sled and on a 400 SKS(Snow King Special) it is not goin to matter much, and it does not look like the stock pipe-looks like a DG.

Dump and clean fuel tank
go through carbs
go through both clutch's
chain case oil and check tensoin
look over track for dry rot( especially if stored wit track on the ground)
slides
all idler wheels and bearings
make sure suspensoin moves free
make sure steering and all cables move in and out free
wear rods on ski's.

if I think of anything else I will post it up after, a lot of this can be done your self- the carbs and clutches I would bring in unless you know what your doing. With just strings showing in the track you might be ok but look for dry rot good. I have owned and ran snowmobiles for well probably 27 years and one winter decided I would use my sled for my daily driving, with some exceptions.

It looks like once upon a day it was a sweet little ride, heck I would still like to have it for my wife, it is a perfect starter sled or younger kids sled plus the SKS part it must have a 136 inch track so it prolly go's a little better in the snow than a normal (121").

BTW-t looks to have aftermarket upgrades like;
the track-I don't ever recall that much paddle(lug height) even on an SKS-
handlebars
front suspension
rear skid (suspension) ?maybe can't recall what the stock rails were?
windshield
pipe-the muffler is a dead give away.

Good luck and great little find for free---like I said before I wish I had it for my wife, she hardly ever rides and doesn't like mine because it is wat to powerful. Little pic of my baby \/

take the pipe off, and fill it with water, and freeze it, it shoudl push that dent right out.

and it is a aftermarket pipe of some kind, the stock one is huge as hell

and insted of trying to find a air box, go to shadetree, and get some kick@ss airfilters, they are about 15 bucks a peice, and bolt right to the carb inlet.

and DO NOT put griptape on the runningboards.....that is just stupid.
Have you ever seen what happens when you get griptape wet? it turns into slick paper ****.

get some rail grips and tunnel supports and you will be fine.

e-mail me at gojo144@msn.com if you have any more questions
