tamiya hummer rear diff lock?

ok i have been searching for 45 minutes and can't find a thing on this...

i am trying to lock my diffs on my tamiya hummer. i am using hot glue but when i pulled the diff out of the rear i found out it was a ball type. so i figure i'll put the ball diff in the front but how do i lock it anyway? i can't imagine hot glue will do it.

unfortunately, this is the closest thing i will get to a crawler for some time so i want to do as much as i can to it for under $20.

I would use some IB Weld.

Mike and I did this in my front diff wich is the same as the rear on my hummer, take out one of the spider gears and mesh it into between the others you may have to do a little scrapeing with a exacto. And you right hot glue will not hold up, I used hot glue before.

there are no spider gears. it is a ball bearing type differential.

i would do that but i am not sure if i want it to be a permanent thing. i tried just taking the balls out and tightening the screw all the way down but all that did was make everything slip more. the gear wouldn't even drive the axles.

i'll give that a try, but i can't imagine it working too well.

That's a cool idea. Does it end up working like it's completely locked, or can it slip a little? I wouldn't mind having mine set up so it can slip just a little.



bubbacheechee, you must have the RTR hummer, as it uses the dffs with the spur gears, and that's really easy to lock up. You also get the cool plastic shield over the electronics. I picked up the RTR version for these differences.

I was looking into the RTR but I wanted to build it. Thats half the fun! Also I hear that it doesn't have oil shocks, is this true? This think looks really cool and I can't wait to get my hands on one!:mrgreen:

The RTR has no oil filled shocks....and that is why it sucks.

traxxas red frection pegs

I tried a set of these, but they seem to be a little bit too long. After i set the gears back up, them main gear would not fit in the housing.

Did you have to modify the pegs?

Well.....an update for those searching. I used the Traxxas friction pegs, however they needed to be shaved down some, they were a bit too long. However, they worked more like a limited slip. I swapped the front and rear gears and JB welded the planetary gears (which are now in the rear). This locked up the diffs quite nicely.
