The right radio?

Ok so my question now is the 4pl or something similar gonna be overkill for my MRC pro right now? Would it be something that I could use now but really not get full use of until I get a 1/10th comp crawler? Because I think I could get that spektrum 3 channel from from friend for dirt cheap if that would be better for my mrc and current skill level. Thought?

if your serious about rc.u might as well get a good.remote once familiar with that remote u will use that remote for.all your rc the 4pl remebers like 40 somethin diff cars or whatever just because u dont use all the features.with every model doesnt mean ubwont use it with all your rc's so might as well upgrade toba good.radio as soon as its in your budget to do so!

+1, yes, you could run just about any radio for the MRC and be fine. But, down the road, you may want to do more than a basic radio (rear steer, dual ESC's, dig, etc.) can do.
Then you will need to sell off your current radio and get something else.
As WR stated, I would start with a radio that has at least 3 channels with #3 a 3 position switch. This is a minimum.
Better would be 4 channels with a fair number of options.

When shopping for a radio, think of how many rigs you think you may want to run and then look to see how much the RX's cost.
My 3PM-x has RX's that cost ~$70 each, more than 1 rig gets expensive fast.
My hacked GT3B has RX's that cost ~$8, a lot cheaper.

Ok I think I am gonna go with the 4pl. I can get it for $190 new now that the 4pls came out. (I can live without the telemetry, I think that's the main difference) I will be able to grow into this as I get more into crawling plus I can use it for my go fast vehicles too. I think I will pick up a cheap flysky stick radio down the road to try out the sticks. I just don't want to spend big money on a nice stick radio and end up hating sticks. Thanks for all the input guys

Snagged a 4pl used but in perfect condition for $140 very happy with it just got some instructions to be reading now. Thanks for the info guys.

Great choice in a radio you won't be disappointed.

When I first started crawling with my xr10 I used to have the dual esc screen on all the time to check on the dig position and propotion setting. Now into year 2 I almost always know my dig setting and can tell with one little pull of the trigger what my propotion is.

Its a a very good radio IMO also don't forget that you can pick up receivers (Futaba R2106GF) for like 30-35 bucks. Not too bad at all.

I wish I would have read this before buying my Tx. I just bought a DX3C a little over a month ago. Only to find out I should have bought a 4 channel for MOA crawling. Of course I threw the box out so my wife wouldn't see something "new"
Lol....

My LHS did say they would give me $50 toward a new Tx though. I mean, I bought it from them and it was $109.....I'm guessing seeing as how there is no box, that is a decent deal?

Or would I make more selling it here?

I would list it in the classifieds for $75. You might not have a ton of luck since your on the other side of the pond from the major market. eBay will fetch you fair market value as long as you already have good feedback. If you have kids you could always keep it for them. My 2 year old runs my wraith with my with my old dx3 and I keep my 4pl nice for myself.

Yea I would go the ebay route if you can. Or you could hold onto it for additional cars you might have. I like having the 40 model memory so I can set up a few cars but I keep a couple set up on cheaper remotes so if kids, friends or the wife want to play too.

Thanks for the suggestions nigels_world and black materia. I do let my son use it to play with an old Tamiya Mini Cooper (m03) that has a crawler engine and is dialed down so he can handle it and have fun (he's only 3.5! Haha) he absolutely loved it. So, with that in mind, I guess I would prefer he use the dx3c over an expensive four channel.

Now, not to hack the thread, but I just recently bought 4 spektrum transmitters too. So, should I stick with a spektrum and get their 4 channel? (I'm guessing that would allow me to use two esc's?) or should I get the fancy futaba (the pl) and use it o my with my crawler and get a futaba rx to go with it?

Imo the 4 channel spectrum is a pita to program and wasn't designed to run dual esc's. You don't need to run out and switch all your rides over to futaba if you go that route. For a crawler I would thio as it is better radio imo.

Good to know Mammoth. Just to clarify, when you say, "you don't have to switch all my rides over to futaba" do you mean spektrum rx's will work with the futaba tx or do you just mean use the Futaba just for crawling and use the spektrum for my other rides?

Yes thats exaatly what I meant about the recievers. There is also a cheaper Futaba receiver for around 35-40 bucks which is inline with the spectrum ones. Let your kid run the spectrum and when $ allows switch over the more important rigs to the futaba. Thats how I have my fleet set up. The rigs I only drive are on futaba but the ones my kid and others get to drive are on spectrum.

I would go with the 4pl because the 4pls just came out for the same exact retail price. So you can get the 4pl for much cheaper if you look and I bet the price will only get better if you wait a bit. That is if you don't care about telemetry. The only real diff between the pl and pls is telemetry capable. Then you get a good price and from what I understand a superior remote compared to the spectrum(in crawling aspects )
