Tommy's Class 1 Jeep

I know this is rc but you said you had a model A. My daughter lives in Frisco, TX. I hope to stay with her next year for lone star.

From Me, By Me, to You.

Nice looking Tudor, man! That's really close to the blue I'm considering for my A. Unfortunately, it's still a long way from paint, thought. If you come down here for the Round Up, shoot me a PM and we can meet up. It's always amazing to me how many RC guys are into traditional hot rods, too. "thumbsup"

After trying to get the RC4WD K44/Yota truss to work for me, I've decided to make my own, but I'll use the RC4WD lower link mounts. I just bent some relatively thick brass. 3/4" wide and I think .060" thick. I would've liked thicker, but I think this will work out fine and the lower profile may help with up travel.

Clears the top of the pumpkin just fine. Now I need to braze on a mount for the upper 3rd link and then determine where I want the track bar mount.

A little more progress...

It's a little wider than I'd prefer and I thought about thinning it down a bit, but would rather keep the strength so I'll leave it as is.

truss looks good, Tommy. any thoughts on brazing in some plate(s) to close it up next to the axle? that'd really set this thing off... 8) it'd also strengthen the truss itself.

Thanks, Mikey. I thought about it, but it would just further "bulkify" the front axle and right now that's my biggest concern. Yes, that's a technical term. LOL!

Procrastination of the bulkificaton could lead to catastrophic failure in a crawling situation. Therefore, I vote for at least some sort of fortification. :flipoff:

Well, I wanted to wait to share pics 'til it was completely done, but it's not. I still have a few things to do (lights, some paint touch-ups, accessorizing, electronics, etc.), but the exterior appearance is nearly done. Here ya go...

Finished the sliders...

Bumpsteer is pretty minimal. Certainly acceptable for a crawler.

Front links will be replaced with black ones soon.

It's even got a driver!

The green doesn't look as faded as it looks in the pics. My phone takes mediocre pics at best. The color turned out to be very close to Electric Lime Green, which was a factory offering for Jeeps. That was completely coincidental, though. I just picked it 'cause I liked it. :ror:

Like I said, I still have a lot left to do, but this is how it sits as of tonight.

Looks great man. Definitely one of my favorite class ones.

Thanks a lot! I've still got some tricks up my sleeve to make it better. Hopefully sooner rather than later!

Looks good Tommy! Nice and clean "thumbsup"

Thanks, Scott! We need to do some wheelin' again soon...

What can I say, I'm a rhe-tard.

Super clean work as usual Tommy. Let's see some video please! "thumbsup"

The first step is admitting it, Dean! LOL! I'm going to work on the final electronics install, lighting, and some tweaks. Then it'll be ready for the trail. Hopefully within the week...

Wow, that looks incredible, nice job "thumbsup"

Thanks a bunch! "thumbsup"

A bit of an update....

I ordered up some LEDs from HeyOK and am prepping the body. This'll be my first time building a set of LEDs. Hopefully I can come away with a clean install! It might be tough, though. Here's an example why. Here I reamed out the front grill for the headlight LEDs. No problem, right?

Well, look how far they stick out compared to the other side which has the lens installed.
20131231_182154-L.jpg

This is how far back the LED gets pushed back to clear the lens. I don't want a bunch of light inside the body so I guess I'll have to coat it with a bunch of liquid electrical tape or something. Or perhaps I can cover the exposed area of the LED with a bushing to help cut down the light?

I also started installing some Locked Up RC scale hardware where I thought it was appropriate.

For the LED's, if you don't mind losing the focus and just want light, I took mine to the belt sander and shortened some as far as I could. For the back just use some black heat shrink.

BTW, Patrick's hardware looks awesome on there. I need to get me some of that stuff.

In the case of moving your LED back from the headlight bucket, ive used a couple of rubber O-rings on the base of the LED and they worked perfect. They also kept the illumination under the body to a minimum aswell.

Thanks, guys! I really like the heat shrink idea. I'll try that first. If I don't like it, I may try sanding down the extra lens material.

Dean, yeah, Patrick's hardware really is great. Highly recommended!

Looks great Tommy! I really like the sliders and cage you did!

Thanks, Scott! I'm pretty pleased with both. Not particularly fancy or ground-breaking designs, but functional and exactly what you're likely to see on a street/trail Jeep in real life. :)

Fantastic work Tommy"thumbsup" So clean and simple. Hopefully we get to see it on the trails this year:mrgreen:

Edit...Just noticed you had Patricks scale hardware holding the inner ring. I never figured anyone would notice but dang, its obvious now, I must do mine"thumbsup"
