Toyota lexan crawler #9, Dark Blue Metallic LC80 TRX4!

It's been a year since the last update. Let's start with a December 2023 meet which this made top 3. First time making top 3 in the show n shine with Butte County Scalers.

In January 2024 I attended Scale Challenge West #6 in Folsom Lake, it's first trail run without a trailer. Won the best scale photo and got sent it in a cool frame. I do want to reprint the photo in non-FB quality because it is horrid lol.

This is the dirtiest this rig has ever been, slowly getting some scale damage over these runs it's been on.

I'll repair the rear bumper, reinforcing it with another layer of lexan. The body will have a bit of character once I clean it. Also, even though I will keep the hitch receiver installed, it is retired from being a tow rig thanks to my Tundra Stepside.

SSD portal delete + front brass. Tires now tuck under articulation! I've got 8mm hexes on it and I want to switch back to stock 5mm to avoid rubbing in the front.

To-do list:
- Redo & detail interior to be more complete (modify rear inner fenders to clear full rear seat)
- Swap in 1400kv Spektrum Firma 2n1
- Kapti Machine Co. 2wd transfer case install (next post will practically be a write-up of my install)
- Boom Racing scale lugs
 
This is sweet. Very clean work. I like your style.

It wears its battle scars well.

Keep us posted with how the fusion puts up with missing nearly half the gear reduction.

With a lot of the gear reduction gone, the 2300kv cannot creep to do technical crawling. But the speed is crazy! 😂
With the 2wd function, it is an absolute BLAST getting sideways on slick tarmac. But also it is on 1.55s now too. I want to throw electrical tape on it one day and drift in the streets. Currently it's got the 1400kv but I didn't change the spur yet.
I'll try to do a proper update soon.

2wd transfer case install that nobody asked for. This will be 2 posts. First, here's the link to the kit, which you can also purchase an aluminum version of the tail housing rather than the printed one in the kit.


Kit contents. You do need to purchase 2 Traxxas parts to complete the install:
- 8284 Rear T lock cable
- 5669 Servo saver

Here are my installation steps.
1 - Unscrew the 2 screws that hold the front of the battery tray down and tilt it out of the way. No need to fully uninstall it.

2 - Remove the spur cover via the 3 screws, and also the rear driveshaft from the transmission.

3 - Remove the 3 screws from the transfer case cover and carefully remove the cover from the housing.

4 - The 5 arrows show screw locations to then remove the transfer case from the transmission.

4.5 - There is also a shim here so be sure not to lose that, or at least have spares on hand.

6 - Install a C clip on the new front output shaft on the side that has one pin hole and slide into position here from the front.

7 - Reuse a shim and install on the opposite side of the shaft (now on the inside of the transfer case).

8 - Pull the shaft to expose the pinhole and install a pin. Should be pretty snug but not completely.

9 - Place the new gear on the shaft, and secure it with the 2nd C clip.

10 - Last piece on the shaft is another pin. If we were looking at the installed pieces on the shaft from front to rear, the order would be:
- C clip (outside), (inside) shim, pin, gear, C clip, pin.

11 - With the all the gears in place, the cover is ready to be installed. I installed the bottom screw to hold it in.

12 - Secure the Traxxas 8284 rear T lock cable to the tailpiece, and bolt onto the case cover with the remaining 2 screws for the top.

13 - The kit is designed for true bolt on setup. As for the servo mount, I modified the piece to lay down next to the 2 speed servo since I run an interior. No need to go into depth there but here are more pictures.

I forgot I had this comparison pic. Tried to go for the simplest yet stock looking setup that's also interior friendly. Today, the cable runs through the slider tray via a drilled hole and runs underneath the frame rail to keep the cable level.

That's a really cool setup. What did it cost? And where can I find the kit? A Bing search left me empty-handed.

Now to bring this up to speed and what's in store.


Stock shocks got removed (Zuullet build) and scale OME shocks converted to coilovers got installed.

Onto more scale, 1.9s were removed for 1.55. Boom Racing again, with the TE37XDs wrapped in RC4WD's Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. I actually really like these tires as they're nearly a class 1 size and they perform well on this rig with stock foams.

Even though the gunmetal doesn't look bad, the sole purpose of buying these was to paint them white. There's a 1:1 80 on IG that's dark blue with white 16" Volks and BFGs so I chased that combo. I ran the Goodyears for an outing before the tire swap. The tires are slightly ballooned due to higher elevation and unvented.

Things to do and ideas.
- Repair rear seats and detail interior
- Vent tires
- Repaint bumpers and side steps
- Bigger spur swap
- Separate winch controller
- Assess separating the coils from the shocks, creating a coil perch using top mounts mounted to the axles and frame rails via screws. Making this happen would give the rig a tad more scaleness even though it's not as scale as a RCRUN kit.
 
Gorgeous build, love it! It takes a good focus to get a rig to this depth of detail. Glad to see it’s gotten the acknowledgement it deserves. It has a kind of subtle perfection about it.
