I'm building an aluminum trailer to pull around, always thought they were cool. Anyways, those of you that have one or built one, how heavy are they? What are you pulling them with and what type of rig are you pulling on the trailer?

Here's mine, with my Yeti or Yeti TT it has quite a bit of weight. still need to add the wheels/tires, axles, mount hooks etc...

Looks cool so far, how do you plan on holding down the expanded metal? To answer your Q's, the trailer pictured here weighs about 5 lbs, car weighs about 8 lbs. Tow truck pulls this combo up and down literally anywhere its hardpack. Really soft terrain drains the battery almost instantly. My tow program in the works is also an aluminum trailer, with a chopped up Traxxas Summit to pull it. Not a scale tow rig "chassis" when you look at the suspension, if you can even see it when its done. Who cares. You won't even know it started life as one. It will pull tons of weight, like I will need it to, plain and simple. Tow truck here is a 4x4 short course rig, can you tell from the pic? I'm not pulling anything with a 30" lift kit and 44" tires on my tow truck, thats not scale in my book. Looking forward to what you do, keep the pics coming. "thumbsup"

That chase truck and Class 1 are bad@$$!! I never would of guessed its a SCT. Thats all good news, last night I was thinking I needed a smart car to pull this thing, lol!

The expanded metal and deck are the same material, I was going to either tack, rivets or maybe JB Weld. I can tell already, this thing will never be "done" I can see myself doing simple math on this thing (adding subtracting)

Mattlooney - I got it from LOWES, it's in the hardware section

Building this trailer proves I'm no engineer,:lmao:!!! I didn't want a solid straight axle, no idea how to build a suspension system from scratch.... So, I'm going with trail and error.... I should rename it, error and error, lol. I wanted it to look as scale as possible, even underneath, so I wanted to stay away from angle brackets . It doesn't look like that's going to happen, I can't figure out any other way to get the support I need, with articulation and no angle brackets. Thesis what I have so far, I'm going to mount an angle bracket on the bottom of the trailer frame to support the axles so they can move up and down instead of all over the place.

4488 Chase F250 SCX10 and 4488 Ultra 4 Jeep (Wraith)

F250 is 9.5lbs with battery and Wraith is 8ish lbs with battery. I dont know exactly how heavy the trailer is, but it is not more than 4 or 5lbs.

I did not build the trailer though, a friend of a friend built it to my specs  . I did want the beavertail on the trailer, but anything more that flat dirt it drags. So really I really only use the trailer as a display at events and such.

If you want some inspiration for a suspension system, look at the Tamiya big rig rear axle suspensions. Easy to adapt to a tandem axle car trailer. "thumbsup"

Definitely good stuff there. I'll say thanks for that as well. I'm going 3 axle on mine, trying to make torflex axles.

OK, a little more progress on my trailer. I went with 5/16 brake line and 1/4 all thread for the axles, versus the 8/32 all thread, axle nubs..... it was a mess. :lmao: As for the mesh, I'm using a loc-tite metal bonding agent. I tested it out last night and it works surprisingly well. I only need the mesh to stay in place, as well as the "bumper" across the front of the trailer so you don't drive off the front and it give support when tying down a rig.

The bonding agent is dried, but takes 24 hrs to cure.

I finished the inner fenders and painted it today, I need to figure out a hitch on the tongue and add some scale accessories. I'm not in a rush for the tongue hitch, I don't have a tow rig yet, :lmao:!

Here are some pics, rerebuilder, the last one is for you.

Here the trailer I been working on. It will be a triple axle with leaf springs.

Holy cow that sucker is long!!! Good thing you're in Texas, you would exceed CA's legal length! I can't start mine until I finish the tow rig to figure out my hitch height. That said, you'll be able to land jets on my aircraft carrier as well.

mHoups, that trailer turned out nice, man. I was going to do perf for traction, I may have to "borrow" your idea with the expanded metal, more agressive for traction. "thumbsup"

Thanks man, your more than welcome to "borrow" the idea. I'm in the opposite position your in, I have a trailer but no tow rig yet.... I don't even know what I'm going to buy to use, lol!!
