Trailfinder 2 Setscrew Issue

I just picked up the TF2 and ran into an issue. The set screws for the driveshafts (tranny to transfer case, transfer case to drive shafts and drive shafts to axles) are all 3mm X different lengths. The holes in the shafts on the tranny, transfer case and input shaft on the axles are too small for the set screws to go through. I scoured the forums and haven't seen anyone mention this so... either all of the holes in the input shafts were drilled too small or, everyone is filing off most of the threads on the set screws? The set screws are different lenghths and match up perfectly with each shaft if they were driven all the way through. I hate to open up the holes on the shafts without getting some feedback. Thoughts?

Hi,

Yeh your supposed to use an M3 x 10mm set screw that is stepped meaning threadless for most of its length so thinner.
You should have got some in the kit. The plans kind of shows this with the diagram but understand its not that clear either.

Tip.....
You shouldn't use in the mean time (which would be an obvious option) 4 short set screws and attack from all 4 sides. The shaft is designed to slightly float and absorb any misalignment between transmission and transfer, which the above would hinder.

Hope that helps."thumbsup"

I thought they should be stepped but none of the set screws in the kit were. I'll just grind the threads off on 80% of the length and that should do the trick. I sure appreciate the help!!

My trans to transfer case coupler seems to only like a fully threaded set screw. The rest are stepped as mentioned above

Typical, after modifying all 6 of the fully threaded setscrews and installing them, I found the little bag with the stepped setscrews. I suppose the ones I modified will be needed later, somewhere. :ror:

I modified long threaded grub screws to act as driveshaft setscrews by dremeling off most of the threads, only to find a random package of fasteners in the TF2's kit box later in the build which included the proper setscrews. Be sure to check all of your baggies.....bet they're in there. Instruction manual was wrong by the way, and showed the wrong fasteners as setscrews. !!
