I am putting this in the Newbie section since it might help out some of them who want to build a tube frame for a rock crawler. There is lots of info on welding the frame, but not much on how to hold the tubes for welding or what to weld on. Hope this might help someone.
I use a Fabrication table made out of 1/8 Aluminum. It sits on 6 blocks to hold it 2 inches above my work table. My blocks are made out of steel but bricks will work just as well. With this I can drill holes in the Aluminum to mount clamps down to hold tubes for welding, or use vise grips along the edge. No fear of starting a fire, or welding the tube to the table since Silver Braze will not stick to Aluminum. Since I live in a Condo, Fab table can be slide behind a desk when not in use so I still have my work table.
Another help in holding tubes for welding is small magnets, some metal scribes you buy have a magnet on the end, I use these to help hold tubes in place for welding.
